Who among these male actors do you think will be the one who (at the end of their careers) has more Academy Award Acting nominations?
(I'm not talking overall, so no Producing or Directing noms included).
No one can predict the future but we can guess.
Vote in the poll and sound off in the comments section below.

Leo I guess. He has many more to come.
Denzel will get a few more, most probably more than Pacino's nine (Al won't get another). But Di Caprio will eventually top this list imo.

This subject is my personal favorite stupid subject on MAR - not the question, it's a good question, but the way people can't think it through logically is quite funny.
It is possible that no one catches Nicholson, if anybody does it's Leo - who I can see at 10-12. So he's the man here imo.
People love to say Washington here for reasons that applied to him before, but not now......... He's 65 now......his upcoming filmography (aside from Macbeth and it's been 70 years since any American male got nodded for Shakespeare) is, well it's very Denzel-ish which is code for not really great.
He ends up with 10 nods and 3 wins if I had to guess. After 65 Oscar nods dry up, people die, you like playing golf and sitting with your wife.....some people have Washington at 4 nods after 65 with that upcoming slate of films and the fact that it's entirely unprecedented for an acclaimed actor and goes against all logic......I call bullshit on that.
Hanks gets to 7 this year and maybe wins, and has at least one more (dark!) baity role after that, and is a couple years younger - he can get 10 and 3 wins too.
DeNiro gets to 8 or 9 (and 3 wins) I reckon, Pacino stays at 9 nods but you never know - he could luck out, directors love him, he gets things written FOR him still - he's the Rolling Stones of actors in career arc - he's been written off and come back more than anyone, and he's not a guy you ever bet against - trust me I am his biggest fan and I called him washed up at 72 and he was sort of great 6 times after that (wtf)....... could see Bale/Cooper ending at 7-8 also.

Don't worry, Administrator, I'll also do this same poll for female actresses (even though I'm sure the overwhelming majority will choose one actress).
But now I'm interested in this one.
As I said in another thread, I think DiCaprio is the most rational and logic choice here, he got 6 nominations at 45, so imo he may very well match and EVEN SURPASS Nicholson's record.
I can see Pacino getting another nomination before dying and thus arriving at 10.
Washington with the upcoming Coen's Macbeth may get his ninth (and it depends on how it's received) but by the time the film will come out, he'll be probably 67 years old, so I don't see many other opportunities for him.
Same for DeNiro, around 9 at the end, when it's all said and done.
Bale is another Academy darling, so I can see him arriving at the end of his career at 8 or 9.
Those to me are the top four.

I went with Leo cause he is so calculated & smart about choosing projects. But man, it could be Bale in the end too. Who knows.

So directors love Pacino and will still write things for him at age 80, but you don't see African-American auteurs like a Barry Jenkins, Ryan Coogler, Spike Lee, etc. or other up-and-coming filmmakers writing anything for Denzel when at age 65: - He's still one of the biggest A-List stars in Hollywood and still a box-office draw (whether the box-office/theater release will still exist in another year of the COVID-19 pandemic is another discussion) - Having him attached to your project will bring financing and bidding interest from studios/streamers and potential industry awards/interest because of his acclaim/prestige and his stature in the industry - He's 65 but doesn't look his age and can still convince in roles for actors in their late 50s/early 60s - He's one of the greatest actors ever and those auteurs I listed above and others (like Steve McQueen who listed Denzel as one of the actors he wants to work with) are going to want to work with him and check him off their bucket list if they hadn't worked with him before (obviously not including Spike Lee) Again and I have to keep reiterating this, he got nominated for a critically mixed film that didn't do much at the box-office in Roman J Israel, ESQ. He's in the Meryl Streep level, where if he does anything remotely awards-bait with a respected director he'll be in major contention for a nomination. Aren't people already predicting him for The Tragedy of MacBeth because he's with Joel Coen and Frances McDormand? You don't think he'll be in those types of projects again after that? Sure roles dry up for the older actors..of course..but Denzel isn't just any old actor..and he still fills the seats. I think he can still be a major player into his late 70s/early 80s or however long he wants to keep going. And I wouldn't just sum a project like "Leave the World Behind" as a Denzel shoot-em-up or as you called "Denzel-ish" with Sam Esmail/Julia Roberts aboard. Your basically saying Hollywood is going to forget about Denzel in a couple of years....and I'm sorry..I don't see that happening. If they don't forget Pacino/De Niro, they're not going to forget Denzel. I think he's in a position to tie/eclipse Jack's record. You're discounting how many opportunities he could have in Supporting Actor once he starts doing those supporting roles, since people like to say the category isn't as strong as Leading Actor. He just needs four to tie. Also, I don't see Denzel slowly retiring to chill at home and play golf. Not with him still talking about doing ambitious projects like King Lear on Broadway. Seems like he still has alot left in the tank.

Interesting. You did this poll on Goldderby, and Washington seems to be winning there so far. He's probably the most revered working male actor in Hollywood, gets nominated easier than almost anyone, looks at least 10 years younger than his actual age, and is probably going to consistently do more Oscar friendly material now that he is ageing out of action roles. I can't see him running out of award level opportunities till he chooses to retire or dies. www.goldderby.com/forum/movies/who-among-these-male-actors-will-be-the-one-who-has-more-oscar-nominations/

I really don't or if they did he won't be in them anyway tbh - because that's not how he rolls, how he rolls is more like this: 10 films in the 2010s and 3 nods - so I actually take him exactly at his word - he'll do stage work, he'll direct a bit......that's what he said he wanted, and I believe it. He has ~50 films now iirc, I do not see him breaking 60 films so I said 2 nods in those last 10.......perfectly reasonable, no? - and I said a 3rd win too. If this was 1998 people would be starting polls and telling us how many times he'll work with Spike Lee in the next 20 years blah blah blah.....but.........nope that didn't happen, it was zero. His Coen film is a very big deal as I've said but that was a stunning announcement and total unlike anything on his resume for scale/prestige......his other 2 films are far more prosaic and typical of his film career patterns. He's not at Meryl Streep's level at all actually. He's far closer to Peter O'Toole's nomination level with mostly sole acting nods for his last 5 nominated roles (except My Favorite Year which got Supporting Actress nod) and just 1 Director nod in those 5 (Richard Rush).......O'Toole died with 8 nominations, there's not much difference between 8, 9, or 10....... Do I think when all is said and done he catches Nicholson .........nope I don't..........or beats DiCaprio.......I wouldn't bet on that either and I'd be far more inclined to bet against Denzel there because of what he gravitates to, the pace of his work and how it traditionally plays out for him.

Seems like he still has alot left in the tank. Yeah, Washington is going to get to 12+ nominations...easily. His consistency is off the charts, and the Academy clearly supports him and reveres him more than any working male actor (most of his nods without Best Picture nominees, and all of them without BAFTA nods. No other actor has that kind of juice with AMPAS). We can state with reasonable confidence that he is one of the few actors the Academy will never get tired of. The fact that at 65 he's still doing what feels like "Prime" leading man roles, and hasn't yet slipped into being the supporting guy for younger A-listers (like Oscar nominated Paul Newman in Road To Perdition) shows just how many potential nominations he has left in him. We don't even know how long it'll take for him to get to the point where he's getting gimme or freebie supporting nominations just for being an old, venerable legend. DiCaprio Academy status is a lot more dependent on the calibre of his director and award chances of his movie than Washington. His projects would get most actors nominated. They like him, but not like they like Denzel. I actually see DiCaprio finishing up his tally somewhere in the Paul Newman range. 9-10 nominations, and done.

We'll see. In his Hollywood Reporter interview talking about his AFI Lifetime Achievement ceremony and looking back on his career..he was asked were there any up and coming directors he would like to work with and he singled out Ryan Coogler who he called a friend and went to support him at the premiere of Black Panther. Ryan Coogler talked highly of him when he went on the podcast whose name you find offensive "Denzel Washington is the Greatest Actor of All Time Period" to talk about his favorite Denzel movies/performances. So I can definitely see him and Coogler doing something together and I'm sure he knows about Barry Jenkins and Steve McQueen. I have no problem thinking he could end up doing projects with them in the future and all three of them have had nomination success with AMPAS. I can see Jordan Peele doing something with Denzel as well, and of course Spike Lee again, and those are just the prominent black auteurs, who knows what white filmmakers are writing stuff with Denzel in mind like Dan Gilroy did with Roman J. Israel, Esq. He has time...and now that I'm in the middle of rewatching Homecoming Season 1...I'm really interested in this Sam Esmail project him and Julia Roberts have lined up.

I mean all those black auteurs is great but in terms of the poll I can't see how age ever trumps youth with the Academy. Is the question "Will he have a good/great career at 65+ or will he have the most nods from the people on the list?" The answer to the first part is he'll be fine at least, maybe conceivably great and maybe greater at 65+ than many actors I'd rank as better than him even........but the answer to the poll part is different imo: People who voted for him in this poll over DiCaprio or to actually tie Nicholson should reference the below numbers for his male peers - those with 7+ nominations. Could he get to 12 (?) - sure in theory he could get 4 - but people who say he "definitely" will are betting on something to happen that is unprecedented.....AND he's already at 8 so it was far easier imo when Duvall went from just 4 to 7 .......than going 8 to ____. Btw I'm interested in Little Things too actually - I think it may be far more comedic than has been discussed and as you know that's something I razz him about as needing to cross off his actor checklist. A comedic success AND a good or better Macbeth would really be quite a 1-2 punch for me........ Post 65 nods: Nicholson - 1 Pacino - 1 Lemmon - 0 Brando - 1 O'Toole - 1 Newman - 2 Olivier - 3 Tracy - 1 De Niro - 1 Hoffman - 0 Duvall - 3 Bridges - 1 Burton - 0
