born today August 8th 1937 (83 years old) I'm not going to lie - I still rank him above Hackman, Stewart, Lemmon, Newman at his best ..........and only behind DePac and Nicholson for the post-Brando Americans. From 67-88 on film he could stand with anyone in American movies, ever. He ranked 7th on our all-time list just behind Hackman and ahead of Stewart, Lemmon, Newman in the top 10. Hopefully he can deliver one more performance to add to his gallery of greats - though in his case that may be on stage in a proposed version of Our Town (which may give him his missing Tony in the Triple Crown which at one time he seemed destined to get). Thoughts on Dustin - his underrated turns.......favorites.......his current status all-time ............do you feel he's slid down on the list ........do you still rank highly or as high as he was? His 7 Oscar nominations rank him near the top - is he over-nominated........not enough .......? ..............what about the situation that has lead to him being in effect cancelled (not actually cancelled but ostracized at his advanced age). One of his very best performances imo - 1978's misunderstood, and underrated "Straight Time":

Happy Birthday, Dusty
I'd rank him above Stewart, Lemmon, and Newman too. Definitely over Brando (fuck Brando) . Somewhat equal with Hackman and Nicholson. I dunno about DDL. Both DDL and Stewart at their best are very good, but they have too many stuff that I'm like... "ah...... I don't care for this at all" or in DDL's case "fuck this" My nominations: '67: Lead Actor - The Graduate '69: Lead Actor - Midnight Cowboy '78: Lead Actor - Straight Time (WIN) '82: Lead Actor - Tootsie (WIN) '85: Lead Actor - Death of a Salesman '88: Lead Actor - Rain Man '06: Supporting Actor - Perfume

No I just can't seem to "separate art from the artist" when it comes to stuff like assault. Fantastic actor but if the allegations are true though, fuck him. Ah, the days where I was his #1 fan here!

Love him, would only put him below Pacino, Brando, Nicholson for Americans. Lenny/Straight Time/Midnight Cowboy are three all-time leads (I like to package them as one in my Top 10 for Lead Actor bc idk which to kick). I think only Brando has as many leads I rate that high (Last Tango, Streetcar, Waterfront or Reflections). Hoff has a lot of other perfs I like - Straw Dogs, Marathon Man, Papillon - and then I love that incredible 80s run of Tootsie, Death of a Salesman, Rain Man, and the fully amazing Ishtar. It's pretty dire after that with the exceptions of Wag the Dog, Luck (I'd def put in his Top 10), and Meyerowitz which is also interesting bc it's sort of a wonder how he's gone so long without more standout supporting roles. Just look at what Hackman and Nicholson could do in small parts. Where are those outta Hoffman? And while having proved himself immensely with comedy, I feel like he should've had a larger string of comic triumphs in his later career that just isn't there - no Woody Allen roles for example is a killer. Still that's over 10 perfs mentioned and I left off some big ones. The vultures are here on spec??

Posting this in his thread because it's too minor for its own.......this is out already and apparently streaming so I'll have to see it.
Not rated highly so far but he doesn't have many films left to go in his career you'd assume and since I'll always love him for his best work......

Tootsie is all time great. Great script, Great supporting (Murray and Pollack! Yes~! Garr? robbed!!!!!!!!!!) and Hoffman in one of the funniest roles I have ever seen on film. I may not be familiar with his BEST but this is the ONE for me. Hands down.

Not rated highly so far but he doesn't have many films left to go in his career you'd assume and since I'll always love him for his best work...... This is a strange one: -~5.0-6.0/10 - Hoffman and Toni Servillo share 2 parts of the story - and Hoffman does almost nothing while Servillo does the heavy lifting and is kind of greatish (improbably so) with a very thin script. The lead actress resembles porn star Cassidy Klein (look her up!) - at her most restrained (and um, clothed ), there is a whole lot of red-herring sub-plots that evoke Se7en, The Pledge, 8 MM and all those other failed movies that try to incorporate Satan in detective-ish mysteries and never quite get it right ( Angel Heart etc).........BUT this movie has a corker of an ending which is good because after people just end up gushing EVERYTHING to police/investigators repeatedly for no logical reason whatsoever you sort of do want a payoff dammit.
