Not a fan of movies about making of other classic movies tbh. And I mean, "Chinatown" is a total masterpiece but is its BTS story really worth telling as a separate movie?
It is interesting to me that Affleck is willing to jump in a project which is bound for controversy regarding Polanski. Unless he cowardly diminishes his role in the film, of course.
Anyway, the main question is: who're they gonna cast as Jerry Goldsmith who we all know was the sole reason for the film's success?

Really bad idea........it's my favorite film but the book is a demystification of the movie, not a movie itself. Read the book, see Chinatown.
Like I am the biggest guilty party in celebrating that time and all those actors, writers, directors and especially mocking what came after the 70s (my specialty) but .....let it go already.
Nicholson must be highly amused that Nurse Ratched from his '75 film - the figurehead of the authoritarian system has been re-thought as a murderess and Chinatown his '74 film needs a behind the scenes film to somehow speak ABOUT the elusive magic of Chinatown itself.
What poor Gods......we do make......

I mean, the only thing I give to Affleck is that he directs some fine movies. And I like movies about movies.
But this looks like a veeery bad idea....

They should get Daniel Day-Lewis to play John Huston...I mean he already has his voice down pat.

This doesn't sound like it has any reason to exist. I love Chinatown but I don't think it's production is interesting enough to warrant a movie. Also, I can't see how it's possible to tackle Polanski without it being highly controversial despite how they portray him. As for casting Nicholson and Dunaway? I'm predicting something dreadful like Alden Ehrenreich and Dakota Johnson

What poor Gods......we do make...... What are your other favorite film books? I plan on reading this soon. What's odd about The Big Goodbye is it's a terrific and detailed analysis of a successful film where the best books to me are the ones on productions that spin out out of control and flame out - The Devil's Candy by Julie Salamon about Bonfire of the Vanities, Final Cut by Steven Bach about Heaven's Gate. The ones on Citizen Kane are all great though and that's what Mank is based on - and what I think this is an attempt to cash in on as a movie too. Any book on Citizen Kane's making is worth reading though. What's weird is The Big Goodbye really takes the position that Polanski made the film great which I think is true and a little bit false - Chinatown is a throwback a producer/director/star/writer pic......... it's an auteur film but it's also not at the same time and it's also more than just the ending. Like I said Chinatown is my favorite movie and Polanski is my favorite director and even I was a little like "damn that's a little unfair to Robert Towne" Enjoy the book

Wouldn't be surprised if it never gets made.
Affleck is attached to so many directorial projects that it's hard to understand which one will be the actual one, and he still has to write the thing.
I don't see it getting made any time soon.

Not gonna be good any way they cut it, literally. Unless they reshape a portion into its own thing, like a tight Robert Evans character study? Idk. The book is no doubt a masterpiece, and can't be captured. As much as I say I love movies about the movies, there are a lot that don't work or fall flat - Hail Caesar, Last Tycoon, etc. We just got OUATIH, Mank coming up, Babylon with Pitt, this won't seem fresh at all and for Affleck a huge gamble that he doesn't need - the guy can't smoke a cigarette without getting a mountain of wrathful tut-tuts.
