Let's go back and try to determine which films would have filled out the field of 10 Best Picture nominees. For years with 9 nominees, you can only select 1 option. For years with 5, you will be able to select 5 options. Some years will be more obvious than others and some will have more options. This isn't based on personal preferences. These are realistic options based on acclaim, precursor support and other Oscar nominations.
This is probably my favorite year of the decade. There were only 8 nominees this year so make sure to pick 2.
Carol - 6 Oscar nominations, GG, 9 BAFTA nominations
The Danish Girl - 4 Oscar nominations, 5 BAFTA nominations
Ex Machina - 2 Oscar nominations, PGA, 5 BAFTA nominations The Hateful Eight - 3 Oscar nominations, 3 BAFTA nominations
Inside Out - 2 Oscar nominations , 2 BAFTA nominations
Sicario - 3 Oscar nominations, PGA, 3 BAFTA nominations
Star Wars: The Force Awakens - 5 Oscar nominations, 4 BAFTA nominations, Biggest domestic box office of all-time
Steve Jobs - 2 Oscar nominations, 3 BAFTA nominations
Straight Outta Compton - 1 Oscar nomination, PGA, SAG Trumbo - 1 Oscar nomination, SAG
Previous results 2019 - Knives Out (22 votes). 2018 - If Beale Street Could Talk (18 votes) and Cold War (14 votes) 2017 - I, Tonya (20 votes) 2016 - Jackie (15 votes)

Definitely Carol, but the second one is tougher I’ve changed my vote three times now for the tenth film lol. I ended up going with Ex Machina since there seems to be support from diverse branches, and I think it was one of the reasons, although certainly not the only reason, Vikander was able to win Supporting Actress even if it didn’t get any acting nominations. It was probably The Danish Girl, but I’m giving voters credit that they may have admired some aspects of it, but wouldn’t give it enough #1 votes to be nominated for BP even in theoretic tenth place.

Carol is obvious. With how many nods it got it's surprising it didn't get in as it was. I went with Inside Out for the other one since it got the screenplay nod. Ex Machina, Steve Jobs, Sicario, and Star Wars are possibilities as well. This was a pretty deep year.
