Both are self-destructive aimless loners. Both command the screen with their explosive and terrifying physicality.
Which performance do you prefer?

Phoenix for me. Good comparison though.

Jack.... as reiterated. But I don't see these performances as similar. Phoenix is more like Richard Burton to me. But Jack takes this. A man of his times. He got less interesting after 1981, but you can't beat him here. Besides, Phoenix is prone to mumbling. Jack does more with less effort.

Well.....each is the best performance either actor has given. Jack is a GOAT contender and no-sh it top 5 American......Phoenix along with PSH is the best post 70s American actor and flirts, already at being within the top ~15 which is quite a feat at his age. BUT I know a lot of guys like Bobby Dupea and Freddie Quell........well not so much and I'd guess they exist mostly in movies ......there's a reason that the guys who are legends are thought of as legends to begin with and that goes beyond to the performances they gave and what those performances "represent". Almost without exception a "big 4" great performance like Bobby Dupea - from the 70s is going to top almost any that came later because movies mean less and have been meaning less for a long time now.....and yes that's a bit unfair .......but it's also kind of sort of true.

The 70s are the peak, no doubt. Acting is less singular after that decade. Even though I think the 80s, 90s and 00s were pretty great for movies even If a little bit less in quality, it's not enough to where I think there's a steep decline. By around 2012 (The Master's release) there's no way even the best films made around that span could compete with the earlier days. Just less originality and singularity.

Phoenix is just too good in The Master for him to lose here but Five Easy Pieces is a Top 3 Nicholson performance

The processing scene is greater acting than anything in Five Easy Pieces, but Nicholson has an actual performance and isn't just mumbling and mugging for 2 hours. Phoenix in Two Lovers would be a closer analogue.
