Two actors associated with two of the BIGGEST names on IMDB historically in Akira Kurosawa and David Lean. Those two have been known to bring out a mass horde of fans who are fond of adventures and epics, on Film General, and the old Best and Worst.
I get the feeling most people default to Lawrence of Arabia for O'Toole even though his career is anything but a long lasting collaboration with Lean. As for Mifune, he was in quite a lot of movies with Kurosawa. Based on my nominations, it looks like a pretty unanimous choice for me... easily O'Toole. Mifune with some major exceptions, plays that same variation of the drunken, bumbling, and jittery samurai. He was pretty awesome in Red Beard though, and I give him the win for that.
Nominations O'Toole:
'62: Lead Actor - Lawrence of Arabia '64: Lead Actor - Becket '68: Lead Actor - The Lion in Winter '72: Lead Actor - The Ruling Class (WIN) '82: Lead Actor - My Favorite Year '07: Supporting Actor - Ratatouille
Nominations Mifune:
'65: Lead Actor - Red Beard (WIN)...... c'est tout.

Mifune doesn't play a drunken, bumbling or jittery samurai in the following films: Red Beard, Drunken Angel, The Quiet Duel,The Bad Sleep Well, Stray Dog, I live in Fear, Scandal, Throne of Blood...and that is just to name a few.
He plays a samurai in these films but he isn't bumbling, drunken or jittery: Samurai II and III (I'll grant he's a bit bumbling in I), Yojimbo & Sanjuro, The Sword of Doom, Samurai Rebellion...and that is just to a name a few.

Peter O'Toole was the Denzel Washington of his day (oh what you Zel-stans never thought of that comparison, huh? Well....you're welcome): The Stunt Man, My Favorite Year, The Ruling Class, Goodbye, Mr. Chips, Venus his last 5 Oscar nods would be nothing without his presence in them but besides elevating them he did it in odd ways too....... in 4 of those 5 he's either straight up comedic or mixed comedic - and that's not how we think of him as an actor either. I mean I love Mifune but .......there's not many people, as an actor, that Peter O'Toole loses to.......... he flirts with the all-time US/UK top 10 in talent and that's some pretty rare company - and he and Burton are the only guys who could have that many Oscar nominations, attain that level of greatness....... and yet we'd think of their careers as "disappointing" because on some level each could have rivaled Olivier.

You've just named 3 or 4 I could argue he was drunken or bumbling or jittery. Heck of a case youre making.

I haven't seen much of Mifune so I'll abstain but honestly I don't think he ever reached the acting quality and depths of O'Toole.

O'Toole's T.E. Lawrence is among my favorite performances ever and I've liked most of his other output, especially The Stunt Man. On the other hand, I haven't seen much of Mifune yet but haven't cared for what I've seen. In things like Rashomon his big theatrical overacting is pretty irritating and I imagine I'll feel similarly about Seven Samurai wherever I get around to it. Whatever other cinephiles are gleaming from that kind of acting, I'm not getting.
So O'Toole by default, but I am curious to see some of Mifune's more grounded perfs at some point. Not in a rush to watch much Kurosawa at the moment...
