RIP. Following up the uniquely wonderful Bugsy Malone with the searing Midnight Express is just amazing (He won a BAFTA for his first three movies I think). Mississippi Burning is so good and his two best Shoot the Moon, Birdy - he could get really great perfs from his actors.

Damn, and I was just talking about him earlier, and how I was sad that he was retired from making movies. His work is largely underappreciated. He made a lot of stylish musicals, but also some fine dramas. Mississippi Burning is a great movie featuring some of Hackman and Dafoe's best work, and Angel Heart is wonderfully ludicrous. Also The Commitments rules. RIP Mr. Parker.

In his day he could do it all. Rest in peace to a serious legend who sailed quite criminally under the radar.

For anyone interested --- here's Alan Parker’s BAFTA winning movie debut. Sort of a flawless little gem about Jewish kids/families in the UK during WWII being sent to temporary foster families; their teacher takes them door-to-door offering them up like a salesman. All of the perfs are very good, with witty dialogue (“Sir, I’ve got a headache in my leg!”) and so many observant, touching details it’s no surprise it was personally drawn from the writer's own experience.

Damn. I haven't watched any of his movies yet, but I'm eagerly looking forward to his The Wall adaptation.
Rest in peace Sir Parker.

RIP Sir Alan. Watching Midnight Express as a teenager was a truly memorable experience, this movie has always been a big cult classic in my entourage...except for the few Turkish friends I have...
