Which of these avant-garde cinéastes known for their experimental styles and on- and off-screen relationships with their cinematic muses (Karina; Rowlands) do you prefer as a filmmaker? Edit: Can you believe that not one of Cassavetes' films was ever in-competition at Cannes? Berlin ( Opening Night and Love Streams) and Venice ( Faces and Gloria), yes, but never Cannes...

Well Godard to me is like QT - he has 2 films early on that I give a sh it about and they top Cassavetes best work (Breathless and Vivre Sa Vie) ....but I like more that Cassavetes did - and I prefer him as an actor to a director even (not kidding) and Cassavetes forms a coherent canon of themes in his work ..........and I love Rowlands ........and more good came from who Cassavetes to me in who he influenced whereas more pretentious bullsh it and un-pacinoyes stuff came from Godard.

I will never be as fascinated by a Cassavetes film as I was by Vire sa Vie.

Cassavetes rules but Godard wins here easily
This forum's dismissal of him is nuts, going back to the IMDB days. He's had some misses but he was constantly trying to push the medium forward in a way very few do + his best work is high level enough where you could genuinely call him a genius.

Oh honey, Cassavetes for me too. Love Streams and Opening Night are my favorites. No director captured the flawed quality of being human and the search for love as well as Cassavetes. His movies also don't shy away from cruelty... I also love the improv feel to them... and of course Gena Rowlands.

Oh wow - just found this quote:
“John Cassavetes, who was more or less my age, now he was a great director. I can’t imagine myself as his equal in cinema. For me he represents a certain cinema that’s way up above.” - Jean-Luc Godard

Would I rather get shot in the face or stabbed in the neck?
