This wonderful gem really got to me - it's so beautifully acted by a heartbreaking Rowlands - it's just so hard not fall in love with her soft, warm maternal side. Tomei and Depardieu are also wonderful in supporting roles. Have you guys seen this? Get the Kleenex ready if not.

It's a sweet, underrated film that I always like to see getting a mention. Probably Nick's best also. Sure, not denying that he has his weaknesses as a director but the main trio of actors are so great that you don't mind the flaws. Love the fact that both Rowlands and Tomei got well-deserved SAG noms. I even recommended it when you were asking for Rowlands suggestions, nice to see you loved it.

I like it too .........usually when I watch Rowlands even in something small like this I feel like you're smarter for just seeing her act.....very few false notes ever from her. I'm also partial to these kinds of stories about people expecting family members to act a certain way or respond a certain way - it rings true (for my family at least.......don't ask!) ..........and you don't see many movies that have anything to do with a boy and his grandmother too actually either......

Oh honey, I love this movie. I liked the complexity of Mildred. There's a certain sadness to her but I always found the 'fuck this' ending, truly optimistic. When I first saw this movie, for the longest time I used to daydream about what Mildred might have done with the rest of her life. Rowlands, of course, brings her completely to life.
Marisa Tomei as the trashy neighbor is just genius!
I have this on DVD, and it's due a rewatch.
Pacinoyes, honey, agree totally. Rowlands' acting is always steeped in emotional honesty. She really gets to the heart of the character without having to resort to the bells & whistles gimmicks that a lesser actress would use. This is what great acting is about.
