Can't be a single artist (no Mike Krol!) ........can't be a main guys backing band (no Ike Reilly!) but an actual band. At various points this title has been a thing of great honor and now well it is almost a joke in this genre but....... I have been - almost daily now - hyping the new release, the 2nd - from Ireland's Fontaines D.C. "A Hero's Death". (Release is July 31st). So who is the "best Rock band in the world" right now for you? Not a band who did a single great album recently but a band you feel could knock off 5 in 5 years etc. and is at their peak currently. .........and it's "band" not "bands" .......there can only be one winner in the steel cage match of Death.

Rock music is in such a sorry state this doesn't mean nearly as much as it did in the past and a lot of the best choices don't fit the criterion. Radiohead, Arcade Fire, and Arctic Monkeys have all peaked already. St. Vincent would be my answer but she's not a band.
I will go with the Austin punk band A Giant Dog. It's been a few years but they reeled off four very good albums in rapid succession and could easily do it again.

Just bumping this thread in case anybody has any new bands to add from 2020 ........ Arctic Monkeys are done recording their next album so that should be out in early 2022 (?)........ Fontaines DC working on their 3rd for next year ........ The Speedways another contender for the crown for me are also working on their 3rd proper album and had my favorite record of 2021 so far - part covers, part live from their previous released work (2018/2020). Parquet Courts - the 2010s most consistent band (arguable I guess but......) - they've never made a dud really and have a new record in October and a couple of their previous ones fought for "best of decade" level in the 2010s

Kind of impossible not to call Fontaines D.C the best band in the world atm - and at this stage approaching an all-timer band. I started this thread for them almost 2 years ago and it's become more obvious imo. That's 3 pacinoyes 8 + albums (higher?) in the top 5 for the year - this year they may be my number 1 - maybe have made their best yet - and pacinoyes hates everything. All of them are "big", their previous one went to number 2 in the UK and this should go to number 1......should break them in the US........all 3 albums are unique from each other........they're going to headline festivals again and play to thousands of people.....already have a Grammy nomination (wtf) and it's not their last (um) .........this is the best "first 3 studio albums" Rock music run since......um.......I don't even know..... I still hold The Speedways in my heart a little more in a small time, Power Pop, personal way but .......Fontaines D.C. are the worlds best band on a whole different, way more ambitious level. Long Live the Kings? New album - Skinty Fia .......out this week April 22nd (reviewed in the "Last Great Albums" thread also)

I don't know about 'Best rock band in the world' but I would pitch Wolf Alice which is a rock band I think have made three very good albums and they have a very varied song catalogue well. They are also a fabulous live band.

Not going to be ridiculous and call them better than Fontaines D.C. or The Speedways without an album atm - but The Clockworks have never released a song that is less than really good........and they've released several great ones - only some of which will actually make their 13 song debut ....... close to ~ 15 songs they've released so far .......how great is this debut album going to be? Not to jinx it but it seems like such a "can't miss" band / debut (comes out Nov 10th) The Future Kings of Rock and Roll in 3 months?

Well the kings of 2023 atm anyway........The band talks about how they made the album, and how they write lyrics and picked songs - pretty fascinating if you are already onboard with the band or this great record and if you're not ........ you really don't like current bands I'm guessing............

3 and half years since this thread started and it's still for me Fontaines D.C., The Speedways ..........and now The Clockworks.....but The Clockworks only have 1 album, 1 EP and some loose non-LP songs.......anybody else looking to crack the top tier?
Not counting individual acts I like Kate Clover or TV Repairmann but bands only..........Amyl and The Sniffers? The Bobby Lees? Only 1 great album for each for them imo........and The Bobby Lees may be broken up........but both were ripping to see live .......I've seen all those bands live except The Clockworks ...for now......

I’d love to hear your thoughts on julie, the most promising band out of the “zoomergaze” scene. No full length album yet, just some singles and an EP (which yours truly listed as one of the best of the MAR era). Not expecting huge praise considering your thoughts on some of their influences, and I get the feeling that just the word “zoomergaze” alone is enough to make you cringe

Shoeverdose........oh nevermind * I know what I hate....and I don't hate that.......heck I'm just happy kids still pick up guitars * I don't like how the songs arc much - it seems random and not structured as "songs" much...........but it's not too far from some stuff I like / love either literally - early JAMC, some of Ride or at least conceptually - Loveless era MBV..........it's disorienting in a good way so that's a start......... Interesting stuff.........I've made a note.......I will review their debut and I will be cruel.........but fair......I'm probably on some goverment tracking list just for listening to this at all aren't I - like when you check questionable, subversive books out from the public library and stuff? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.........thanks............. ...............

Just know that they - and the entire scene as whole - are just as influenced by Nirvana (your favs) and grunge as they are shoegaze and you will certainly hear it on some of their other songs. I was nice and gave you the more shoegaze-y stuff to lure you in

A former coworker of mine of mine caught The Clockworks in Paris on April 10th and sent me an email saying they were amazing ........still no US 2024 dates scheduled as they rip through Europe and only one album, 1 EP and some scattered singles.....but it's all great tbh....when will they hit the US..........this winter?.......... maybe? What a band though .......
