I'm a massive fan of hers and of Golden Age Hollywood in general. I genuinely thought she would live for ever, so I'm at a loss for words. I will leave it to others to comment, as I'm too stunned to write.

Oh, fuck!! That's awful!!! No matter if she turned 104 recently, she was the one out of only two left of the golden Hollywood era (Eva Marie Saint being the other). RIP, legend.

The words 'a civilization gone with the wind' were never more true. So long, legend.

I will leave it to others to comment, as I'm too stunned to write. Yes, I know it's silly to think someone could live forever, but with de Havilland I had thought that too. I know it was sort of a running joke about how old she was among some film buffs, and it just seemed like a joke that would just keep going. Plus, with her lawsuit against Ryan Murphy, I thought that was a great sign that she was still pretty with it mentally, and doing well physically. RIP to a legend. It especially hits hard because Gone With the Wind was one of my mom's favorite movies, and one of her best friends, my sort of pseudo grandfather, would sometimes talk about de Havilland and Fontaine because of their connection to Japan.

Well, guys, it's now up to all of us to piss on Ryan Murphy's grave. It's what she would've wanted.

We never found out what happened between Olivia and Joan, right? Olivia was the favorite of their mother, who basically encouraged the rivalry and basically belittled Joan at every turn while they were growing up, and Olivia never came to her sister's defense. Their mother even forbade Joan from using the De Havilland name, forcing her to use "Burfield" and ultimately "Fontaine." That rivalry, coaxed to life almost from the moment Joan was born, essentially meant there was so sisterly love between the two.

It is such a juicy story.

That rivalry, coaxed to life almost from the moment Joan was born, essentially meant there was so sisterly love between the two. Pretty sure a movie will be in the works one day. It is such a juicy story. Actually, it really isn't. This isn't a pulpy Bette Davis/Joan Crawford-type feud, although Ryan Murphy obviously wishes it were, and a lot of the biographies tend to sort of overstate their feud. Even the moments like Fontaine's reported snubbing of her sister's congratulations when she won the Oscar were largely overblown in the press. Fontaine was a little bit more forthcoming about their relationship than de Havilland was, but even then, there wasn't any sort of public mudslinging like you'd think, given their reputations. They didn't like each other, this is true, but they mostly just kept out of each other's way unless someone asked one about the other.

Oh honey, it's mind blowing to think she acted with Errol Flynn, who was rather fond of her ample assets. He was quite hands on, from what I read... RIP Olivia.
