Personally, I watched Infernal Affairs first in 2004 or so, and quite liked it, but found The Departed stronger in pretty much every way - a deeper narrative, richer characterizations, etc. Where do you guys stand?

Infernal Affairs is better in pretty much every respect except I will give The Departed credit for the Dignam character, which goes a long way.

I prefer The Departed mainly because of the cast and direction.

Infernal Affairs
I liked what Damon was doing in The Departed, but DiCaprio never felt believable. Everyone was constantly talking about a Rat in their presence, yet DiCaprio's supremely shifty, anxious and fidgety performance would make him easily the most obvious suspect for being that guy. Maybe these gangsters were extremely stupid, but it just made the whole thing tough to buy. He's acting like a Rat every second he is onscreen with them. And Nicholson was an out and out cartoon. The Departed is an enjoyable, propulsive piece of pulp if you don't examine it too deeply, but when you think that it won Best Picture and Scorsese won his only directing Oscar for this, it's hard to compute.

Infernal Affairs for me. It's a lot cooler, more atmospheric and I like it's more minimalistic approach. Also Andy Lau and Tony Leung have much better chemistry than Damon and DiCaprio. I somewhat like The Departed, but it's just Scorsese going through the motions.
