He's also campaigning hard for Bakalova. And I think that's going to be the tipping point for her.

He’ll never admit it but I think he’d like to play more serious roles and he knows an Oscar might help him get them. I also agree that he genuinely cares for Bakalova and he’s campaigning for her too.

I honestly think Cohen might just win supporting actor. He's campaigning so damned hard! Didn't realize he was doing all the press, makes sense though. The academy does love a "narrative", so I can definitely see him winning.

I don't see how SBC playing a comedian and the guy who can't stop making fun of the absurd proceedings is "playing against type".

Yeah, Cohen can win, but it certainly won't be because he is "playing against type".
You don't need to play against type if the Academy really feels you've paid your dues and are happy to reward you. Look at Laura Dern. She's played variations of her Marriage Story character before, but it was simply her time.

I'll give Cohen 2nd place over Odom Jr. at this point but I still think Kaluuya has the commanding lead. Even 2nd place baffles me though because, as much as I like Cohen, he was pretty unremarkable amongst even just his own ensemble. Who actually prefers him to Rylance, Langella, AND Abdul-Mateen II?
