From 2007-2017 he made 4 movies.......and if he had gotten an Oscar nod for Nine (2009) that would have been 4 nods IN A ROW which I think is unprecedented (heck even 3 might be unprecedented?). Now I'm not as much of "Nine" hater as some are but.......... let's give him a different followup to TWBB and a role before Lincoln but limit it to a role that existed in 2008/2009 that DDL could have done instead of "Nine" and that you think he'd totally nail? Doesn't have to be a role that GOT nodded in 2008/2009 just that you think may have been nodded if he played it........

Maybe Nixon in Frost/Nixon? Firth's role in A Single Man? Crazy Heart?

The first one that comes to mind is the role which takes my Best Actor win for 2009: Viggo Mortensen's role as the father in The Road. Mortensen is herculean in it and I can't see anyone doing better than he did in that role, but I think Day-Lewis would've been able to bring something very special to that part, especially on the heels of him playing a rather beastly father in his recent Oscar-winning role.

I like the suggestion of Firth's role in A Single Man. It would have been a stark contrast to TWBB (a more "normal," less larger-than-life character), but I think the part might still have been good for him at the time and would have given him something more internal to play.
Going in the other direction, it would have been interesting to see him to do something completely no-holds-barred and out of left field like Cage's role in Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, as bizarre as that sounds (playing a cop!). Hard to imagine the Academy going near that film no matter who was cast though.

Maybe Crazy Heart would be a good idea.

Waltz was perfect but he’d make an interesting Hans Landa.
Similarly, Rockwell was perfect but he’d be interesting in Moon.
