.........in Affliction vs. Road To Perdition
This is the last of these polls I had planned (oh shut up and stop clapping! - these were fun even if all these weren't close - some were though! ): 2 guys who are the exact opposite in one way - Newman with 9 nominations - this was his last nod (1 win) - and Coburn with no previous nominations. Coburn would win ......Newman would never get that 2nd Oscar win but his starry reputation sort of outpaced the Oscars anyway I'd argue. Both in their 70s, both two of the most celebrated supporting turns of the last 25 years - both where the paternal instinct plays a big part in the portrayals and both which in many ways stole the show in their movies.

Coburn, no comparison.
Newman has always underacted. No different here. Don't get the praise here at all, or for The Verdict. My least favorite of the nominees in 1982, and my next-to-least favorite of the nominees in 2002.

Coburn's win is extremely underrated, but this is my favorite performance of Paul Newman's, and he takes this quite handily.
