Not exactly a fair fight this, and I like Tomei. She's a pleasant actress with a deft comic touch.
The correct answer is Julianne Moore, who is in a completely different league.

Moore easily. Tomei is a good comedic actress and performer, but she lacks the versatile that Moore often brings to her roles. To be fair to Tomei, she generally gets supporting roles, and worthless wife parts, so it's not exactly her fault, but still there's really no comparison either.

Julianne Moore might be the most risk taking and best American actress of her whole generation (she turns 60 in December) She doesn't even let a Boston accent stop her

She hasn't lost her looks, she has what seems to be a very stable/grounded family life, but it's like 80% of her projects tank.

Tomei, and for me it's not even close. Moore can be excellent, but she has far too many bad tendencies and can come off extremely overwrought. I don't think I've ever truly disliked a Tomei performance (or, if I have, not to the same degree I've disliked a lot of Moore's). I think Moore's catalogue avails her to better roles, and she certainly has the stronger filmography, but not necessarily better performances.

Mixture of bad luck and mostly making uncommercial arthouse projects without auteurs still at the top of their game. Here reteaming with Todd Haynes in Wonderstruck flopped, George Clooney continued to show he was a very overrated director when Suburbicon tanked. The Glorias got mediocre reviews and Julie Taymor probably isn't the most relevant of auteurs. Gloria Bell got solid reviews and a strong reviews for her performance, but couldn't find an audience. Moore is still getting cast in things, but it's mostly indie type films with a high rate of failure. This is really why so many actresses her age are finding their most potent opportunities on television or streaming now. Unfortunately, Moore seemed to pick one of the few streaming shows ( Lisey's Story for Apple TV) that looks to be a critical dud, as it was just released and currently has 55% on Rotten Tomatoes despite being directed by an acclaimed current and relevant auteur in Pablo Larrain ( Jackie). So yeah, more bad luck.

I'm on the Tomei train. I've been just as impressed by Tomei at her best as I have been by Moore, perhaps even more so. Taking into account the bigger amount of Moore performances I've seen by comparison, that gives Tomei the edge for me.
Love them both anyways.

I love them both. Moore is one of my favorites for sure but I give the edge to Tomei whose filmography is not as strong but she's more consistent, never hit Moore's lows, and also has slightly more natural screen presence to me.
I also would disagree with she's not a versatile performer. She's an excellent comedic actress with an all-timer performance ("My Cousin Vinny"), a wonderful romantic female lead ("Untamed Heart", "Only You") and a dynamite dramatic performer who does wonders even in supporting roles ("In the Bedroom", "The Wrestler", "Unhook the Stars"). Just recently, stole the show in "Frankie", "Human Capital" and "King of Staten Island" - all different kind of roles.

So yeah, more bad luck. Yup, and most actresses of her ilk also similarly struggle for great roles. Just look at Tomei, who mostly just plays girlfriends and or aunts roles nowadays that don't really allow her to stretch her skills, at least Moore gets leading roles in comparison. Hollywood has gotten better when it comes to actresses over 40 having great roles, at least a lot of major actresses don't retire in their mid thirties, but they still have a long ways to go.

Moore can do, well, more and has reached higher peaks but Tomei wins in the naturalism and consistency departments.

Its Aunt May all the way for me! (aka Marisa Tomei ) Been a big fan of hers for quite some time (what can I say, Italian women are my weakest and Marisa Tomei has aged like fine wine . Oh and she is such a talented actress as well!) IMO her Oscar win for My Cousin Vinny gets waaaay too much hate. She was great in that film as the trash talking girlfriend to Joe Pesci . Also she has two other well deserved Oscar noms for her dramatic work in The Wrestler & In the Bedroom. I hope she gets more good acting roles in the future
