If I die and........... let's face it .............this coffee consumption isn't going to keep me going forever - I want you to remember one thing I always say: American male actors often hit a wall in their 60s - we've done a few but this is only the 4th in Best Actor iirc (Lead). Which brings us to today's old dude poll: 2 powerhouse turns by actors I think are in the same general league too ........these turns were in their 60s and sit at near the top in each actors respective filmography: Duvall at 65 and Washington approaching 62. Two performances that a lot of people thought should have won the Oscar but never really had a chance (imo) as the zeitgeist was with others that year (Nicholson and Casey Affleck). Comparable acclaim too - Duvall won the NSFC and this was his 5th nomination (of 7 eventual Oscar nods) ...........Washington won the SAG and this was 8th Oscar nod. Two performances that if they won would have meant a whole lot to them and two performances that have a big "Lear-like" scene where their character talks to God and rails against Him. Portrayals of deeply flawed and complex men. It's hard to do this poll with good matchups and it's hard to imagine either of these bravura turns losing to ANOTHER actor in their 60s besides their competitor here. Duvall - The Apostle/Washington - Fences

Duvall by quite a bit. One of my favorite performances by anyone that decade.

Neglected to mention of course in addition to all the other similarities these were also both examples of each man directing themselves which almost never works out like this did....

Both are pretty out-damn-standing and would rate as perhaps my favorite leading performances of either man's career in cinema, and both really were far better than who eventually beat them for the Oscar, but I'll throw a vote Denzel's way, purely because I think he wowed me more.

I prefer Duvall a bit more.

I gotta go with Denzel but the two of them are totally extraordinary. Both are my BA winners for their years.

97 was the first year I started following the Oscars and Duvall’s loss still stings.
