I’m not a huge reader in general any more. Would like to try to r4ad a bit more but don’t want to tackle anything too dense or difficult. Last two books I’ve read were Pop 1280 and The Martian. Really enjoyed both and looking for stuff comparable.

I'd recommend The Chain by Adrian McKinty. A tense, top-notch thriller of the highest order, but it's instantly engaging and isn't a tough read at all.

Stephen King's short fiction! Night Shift, Nightmares & Dreamscapes, Everything's Eventual, and The Bazaar of Bad Dreams are all quality collections filled with spooky diversions. Very easy reading. As longer-form stuff goes, his novella collection Full Dark No Stars is pretty good too.

Not sure if it fits your criteria, but for what it's worth my favourite book is Gone Girl.

American Gods fits this bill, I think. Long but an easy, engrossing read.

Some crime recs off your Thompson - I'd rec some Charles Willeford; Wild Wives or High Priest of California or The Woman Chaser or Understudy for Death. Really anything from him , most of his books are under 200pgs and aren't difficult to read at all; and he cleverly builds his themes and characters and his endings don't ever wimp out either. Something more "pulpy" (and lesser known) Epitaph for a Tramp by David Markson. Something outright comic - Help I Am Being Held Prisoner by Westlake. Outside of those, random but Jesse Eisenberg's short story collection Bream Gives Me Hiccups is a very funny breeze to read.
