This one is a little different because to me Jessica Lange is rated far more highly than anyone we've done prior imo - Pitt, Ford, Linney, Nolte........so unlike those 4 I don't expect many "underrated" votes here........... but you never know. A 2 time Oscar winner, 6 time nominee and a Triple Crown winner she revived her career in ways in the last 25 years that were unexpected and mostly outside of film too ..........but she also annoys a whole lot of people too. So I figured she'd be interesting to assess as a curveball actress though I don't think in general the "highly nominated actors/actresses" (5+ Oscar nominations) are actually that good of a fit for this poll tbh.

Your assumption is correct.
No way she's overrated tho. Overrated by who..... anyways? I highly doubt most people have seen enough from her. The guys who mostly talk about the 2010s, I highly doubt they went all the way back to the 80s and dug her up. Making her, by definition...... underrated.
I guess there's the Streepheads too. Can't argue with them.

Many awards and praises for Lange but to me she deserves all of them.
Just right.

I definitely see Lange's appeal, but much like Streep, I find her far too unnatural in most of her performances. Whenever she has to play subdued, introspective roles she can be very good, but most of the time, I think she feels like she has to play to the cheap seats. It's the sort of theatricality that can go wrong so very, very easy (and why I respect Geraldine Page so much, because she could pull it off and make it feel natural), and unfortunately, Lange tends to misfire more readily than she sticks the landing. I think of something like American Horror Story, where I'd say she has one amazing season (Asylum) versus three horrible ones. I've not seen her stage work, obviously, and judging by the raves she got for her Mary Tyrone, I can see why she'd be a fantastic fit for it, but stage and screen are two different media and you have to apply different methods in order to attain believability, and more often than not, Lange fails to do that for me.
So yeah, overrated.

Underrated in this forum, just right everywhere else.
