............for their performances in 45 Years (2015) vs. Notes On A Scandal (2006).Well this one sort of violates my rules of "comparable acclaim" - both were Oscar nodded for BA but Rampling won many international awards here. Both were near the same age 69-early 70s, both were great opposite a great co-star too.............. and both involve aging and dependency on a partner. Dench of course had many plaudits prior and since while 45 Years represents Rampling's high water mark and made people consider if she'd been passed over in her career prior. These are two performances I have only ever heard raves for ..........

This is a tough one. Notes on a Scandal is prime Dench rather than late Dench in my eyes. I guess Philomena would count as late Dench, but not even that....lol.
To break this tie, I'll vote for who had the better career which in my opinion is Rampling. Dench while solid in some of her other movies is a 1 time nominee and 1 time winner for me...... Notes on a Scandal.
Outside of 45 Years, Rampling is my winner for Flesh of the Orchid, a nominee for Georgy Girl and Restless. And misses for Under the Sand because of the strength of the year (2000). Also liked what she did in Heading South. Both great, but like I said gotta be a tiebreaker in there somewhere. Tho superficial maybe.

Dench hasn't yet moved to her "late" career years

Both are wildly overrated, but I guess Rampling.

Both are wildly overrated, but I guess Rampling. Question for stephen (and any one else really who wants to chime in): Does anyone feel this is a case of co-star overshadowing - does anyone feel Rampling and Dench weren't the best in their respective movies maybe and their co-stars here are better?

I think Dench is better than Blanchett (whose performance I really don't like), and I think Courtenay is more or less on Rampling's tier, but he's given a lot less to do.

I like 45 Years/Rampling but def Dench for me - not only the type of perf I generally prefer but she's given more, a tightrope tension - thrilled, scared, repressed, creepy, sad. She's more locked onto her costar as well, and Blanchett is somehow even better than Dench (they're both probably my wins for the year), whereas with Rampling/Courtenay there's an intentional emptiness between them, which is essential for the subtle wave of reflection and questioning the movie is going for and achieves but gives us less actorly "chops" from them.
Props to both for being 90ish min movies without feeling clipped.

Both are damn near perfect but I'll go with Rampling.

Super duper tough. Both so amazing and two of the greatest performances I've seen. I'll go with Dench. The bitch was nasty 😋

Rampling was good in a very weak film. Dench was sensational in a very entertaining film. It's quite an easy pick.
