no thread about this yet? L
lovely ass picture. i wouldn't quite put at the top of the reichardt list, but it's a pretty daunting achievement so far. few movies out there with as big a heart of this.

I knew you'd steer it to laugher. Sometimes it is better to be seen and not herd.

Saw it back at Berlinale. Was my favorite film there. Not a fan of the opening scene but apart from that it was such a humane, enriching experience to watch.

Very good stuff. A beautiful portal into a different time which gives you a distinct feeling of nature, places and people. A wonderfully balanced take on the pros and cons of capitalism. And a rock solid story of a friendship that doesn't waste time on empty and obvious conversations but instead creates a quiet but palpable relationship between the main characters.

I thought it was a beautifully shot tone poem with so much left unsaid, but not necessarily needing to be, and Orion Lee and John Magaro have chemistry for days and days. Problem is, the story felt too elliptical for its own good. I do wonder if the excising of the novel's parallel story has a lot to do with it.

Twitter critics (critters?) went berserk over Armond White's piece on this movie - so why should they have all the fun! www.nationalreview.com/2020/07/movie-review-first-cow-anti-masculine-anti-western/I liked the movie - it's gradual, looks plausibly by turns musty and beautiful, I liked the actor perfs too, but also feel it isn't so complex or go so deep (example, Meek's Cutoff moves and weaves and digs like this movie doesn't). White's review is typical, he walks into the room angry, there are his buzzwords (cynicism, etc) but I don't disagree with all of it - I mean, certainly not the McCabe praise. Any reactions to this piece?

I liked Wendy and Lucy for what it was, but I'm very suspicious of directors like this. If you don't care about effects and imposing your will on the audience, you lose me. You're basically a pointless nobody with nothing to say or project. I think that's pernicious, and tries to turn cinema into the gallery visual arts medium that has become so empty and pointless in the second half of the 20th century. I didn't like OUATIH either, but let her make a Pulp Fiction before opening her fucking mouth.

The best American Western ever made if it wasn't for Johnny Guitar. It nails what the genre is all about (expanding markets) in a way that most westerns from the classic era do not at all.
Though I have not seen Meek's Cutoff which I'm super excited about. Really dig her style, Riechardt is pretty much an instant favourite.

STOP. Reichardt is good, but not amazing. Nothing she does screams bees knees.

Slowly making my way through 2020 films that I'm behind on...
Took about 30 minutes for me to get into this, but ended up really liking it overall. Works as a beautifully melancholic allegory about who is allowed to carve out their own place in the world, and how easily those without means can be stamped out by others who cannot bear material loss when they have more than enough.
In some ways, this reminded me of The Tree of Wooden Clogs...

Can't believe I never posted in this thread. Still my favorite of the year easily and top 3 Reichardt for me. Just a great movie about good dudes and their bitchin' bakery.
