in Amour vs. Driving Miss DaisyJessica Tandy is sort of like James Earl Jones to me - but better maybe and also without her own thread on MAR (um) but exemplary in what she did - a Triple Crown winner - with 4 Tony wins (!) ..........yet............. she's also like Christopher Plummer - no Oscar nods until 80+! She also gets dissed a lot because wackjob Spike Lee didn't like the movie or something.........but she handles the text of the play beautifully. She's used to being dissed anyway - see Streetcar Named Desire where everyone from Broadway got the movie EXCEPT her..........grrrrr Riva of course here got her first and only nod and gives much of this performance in silence which may make some (wrongly) question how good it is. On some level I have no clue who will win this poll.......they're so opposite. I could see Riva getting a whole lot of support for her movie and arty niche support too and the fact that it's so unique ........I could see Tandy getting getting a lot of trendy "she was just the original elderly "Karen!" (um).............. (still find that quite racist......but um I digress!). ........... and like Farnsworth/Dern these are the 2 oldest BA candidates in their category.........and both performances have to be in perfect sync with their male co-star to work too. Who do you got?

Gonna be in the minority on this one, but Tandy by far. Riva was very good but she's so damned passive for much of the film that she almost becomes a prop. She's staggeringly good when she has to be, but for so much of it, I feel that it's Trintignant having to play off of her that makes her as good as she is.
Tandy, meanwhile, dominates her film so thoroughly and makes for one of the best winners in the category, even if her film is very weak around her and Freeman.

Never got the rage over Riva if I'm being honest, or Amour in general which plays like a dour 120-minute ad for assisted suicide. "Thanks for the memories, babe!" *yanks the cord*
I've said this before, but virtually every aspect of Driving Miss Daisy (except for Ackroyd) is pretty underrated and it seems that now includes Tandy.
