These particular polls are not "supposed" to be close/competitive or logical matchups necessarily  - it's just ~same age, comparable acclaim and role category...........so having said that.............. this one I would expect to be very close/competitive  2 GOAT contending actors........ Olivier in Sleuth (1972) vs. Nicholson in About Schmidt (2002)Both leads .........both actors were ~64/65 when shot, both significant in their careers - Olivier's 8th (of an eventual 10) Oscar nod, Nicholson's record extending final nod - his 12th. Olivier in a role that couldn't be more British........Nicholson playing a prototypical aging American male. Interestingly enough these two actors started playing older far earlier than their peers - they had almost no vanity to appear at age or older on screen which is very surprising given their status (and Nicholson's "Mr. Hollywood" cache). Who is your pick in this matchup?   |

Well.... this thread seems to have my name written on it.
Depends on how I look at this. On one hand, this performance is one of my favorites from Jack. It's in his personal Top 6 (Carnal Knowledge, Cuckoo's Nest, Reds, The Postman Always Rings Twice, The Pledge) It is, however, not one of my favorites from Olivier. In that it barely scrapes his overall Top 10 or maybe doesn't even make his Top 10 once I factor in his TV work.
This is the overall quandary here. Olivier has the added addition of doing fine work on TV. Nicholson doesn't have a whole lot of TV work, but he does have the added dimension of being able to do comedy, which is what leans me towards thinking this nomination from the academy is spot-on. It was a strong category and many people thought he was the weakest link. But NO WAY. That's Adrien Brody's blankness.
But judging just these one performance overall.... I prefer Olivier. Not by a galaxy, but by about the length of a measuring stick I would say.
Comparing them as actors.... Nicholson was pedestrian from 1983-2000. I haven't seen The Border (1982) though. Olivier never had a period of dryness that long. His only brief down spell came from 1978-1981 where he had a few run-ins with the Razzies and that was admittedly his lowpoint, but after that he went back to TV and turned in a few more dandy performances. Olivier has done more (reminds me of Pacino > DeNiro in this comparison), but I respect Jack as an actor a lot. He's definitely one of the pivotal figures of the modern wave of actors.

Olivier for me. Holds the screen against another titan and manages to steal the show in my opinion.

Both are really good but Nicholson takes this. One of my favorite of his performances and my win that year -- I love the vulnerability he shows and that ending is so unforgettable.
