Unlike 2000, 2002, and 2003.... this year sucks. Worst year in that 15 year stretch 1989-2003. What's interesting is that this year was my personal turning point. Where previously I saw only the mainstream films, this year I began to expand past just the films that made noise. I followed the circuit closer this year than any other year I can think of apart from 2003 and maybe 2006.
My top 8 of 2000 I prefer to my #1 of this year
My top 6 of 2002 I prefer to my #1 of this year
My top 7 of 2003 I prefer to my #1 of this year
Best Picture
1. Millennium Mambo
2. A.I.
3. Trouble Every Day
4. Cowboy Bebop: The Movie
5. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
6. Millennium Actress
7. Planet of the Apes (yes, you saw right)
8. Y Tu Mama Tambien
9. Storytelling
10. Monster’s Inc.
(can't believe Storytelling and Monster's Inc. make my Top 10. I like both but neither is Top 10 of the year material.)
Lead Actor
1. Bill Murray – Speaking of Sex
2. Jack Nicholson – The Pledge
3. Tom Wilkinson – In the Bedroom
4. Russell Crowe – A Beautiful Mind
5. Denzel Washington – Training Day
(lead actor is also weak. Murray is my win but that performance might not even make my Top 10 Bill Murray performances. Nicholson and Wilkinson are good. The other two are just conventions.... I only kinda mildly like them because I got no one else.)
Lead Actress
1. Tilda Swinton – The Deep End
2. Beatrice Dalle – Trouble Every Day
3. Qi Shu – Millenium Mambo
4. Mary Steenburgen – Wish You Were Dead
5. Reese Witherspoon – Legally Blonde
(Swinton wins... handily. Dalle is her only competition. Wouldn't say it's a really strong Lead Actress category either. The weakest of the 00s. Weakest since 1993 and maybe 1991. The Oscar nominees are extremely weak)
Supporting Actor
1. John Goodman – Storytelling
2. Ian McKellen – The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
3. Steve Buscemi – Ghost World
4. Jim Broadbent – Moulin Rouge!
5. Jude Law – A.I.
(No way the last 2 makes it any other year. Goodman, McKellen, and Buscemi are all worthy but there are years where all 3 wouldn't make it)
Supporting Actress
1. Emily Watson – Gosford Park
2. Maggie Smith – Gosford Park
3. Jennifer Jason Leigh – The Anniversary Party
4. Marisa Tomei – In the Bedroom
5. Michelle Pfeiffer – I Am Sam
(This one isn't bad... the only category of the year actually not weak)
