Get those knives sharpened, pupdurcs. 17 nods, 6 wins.... just my guess. Am I close?
Here's my nominations:
'89: Supporting Actor - Glory (Don't think there's any other performance in the category I liked that year. Maybe Derek Jacobi for Henry V but category is too forgettable to judge, but Denzel in on top out of the basis of a painfully weak category.)
'95: Lead Actor - Devil in a Blue Dress (#4 behind Cage #1, Hopkins #2, DeNiro #3 Heat or Casino)
'01: Lead Actor - Training Day (recently have been expressing my sourness for this performance. Rewatching it some months ago it was not the same film I saw back in 2001. It's so much duller and shallower and Washington while scathing and energy expending for sure, something still felt empty about all that sound and fury. Still, that category is the weakest in that 15 year stretch so by default he makes it along with Crowe and Wilkinson. My winner is Bill Murray for Speaking of Sex.....which maybe slightly makes my Top 10 overall from him.)
'04: Lead Actor - Man on Fire (WIN)
For 1992... maybe, but definitely not over Oldman and Day-Lewis - then there's favorites like Eastwood, Pacino, and Douglas.... he doesn't have the favorites values like those do, but he's under my consideration.
For 1999.... more likely. But Crowe, Pacino, Norton, and Penn are my top 4 for sure. Not sure about my #5.... could be Winstone, or Broadbent, or Depardieu, or Farnsworth but I probably prefer Winstone. So probably not there either.

To be honest, I'm all Denzel'd out for the moment. We talk about this dude almost every day, in some form or another. A new thread about him really has to justify itself for me to get worked up about. This doesn't feel like a particularly fresh angle, no offense. Pretty sure we've done a nomination thread for him before as well where I said what I had to say about that, so sorry to disappoint...no knives to sharpen Hope you enjoy yourself though. I'm sure you will get plenty of takers for this topic with the usual suspects.

For me he has been truly great 5 times: Malcolm X (win), Fences, Training Day, Flight, He Got Game.....obviously the first 2 tower over the last 3..........and I don't begrudge his noble, heroic "one note" nods even if they don't do much for me (Glory, Cry Freedom). The Hurricane where he's sort of great-ish - he has some great scenes at least - misses because of the year itself being too deep. Said this before .......he may be a more interesting actor when we finally see Macbeth at age 65 than he ever was at 35, 45, 55 ....

Nominations for Malcolm X and Fences, and depending on the day he probably also makes it in for Devil in a Blue Dress and Cry Freedom. The biggest problem with Denzel, for me, is that he usually gives his best work in years that are just murderously strong, and there's a good half-dozen or so performances of his that if they'd come out a year before or since, he stands a very good chance of getting in. I do like him more than what my nominations would suggest, especially nowadays.

Surprised I'm the only one who'd give him a win for Hurricane...
Oh, well.
Mind you, I remember almost nothing of the competition he had. So, judging by the performances themselves:
4 Nominations Fences Training Day Malcolm X Glory
1 Win The Hurricane

Get those knives sharpened, pupdurcs. 17 nods, 6 wins.... just my guess. Am I close? I used to have this saved but the amount of people who send me stuff is too much for me to keep track of because I don't give a sh it about it - which shouldn't be taken as a diss of him just because he gets a lot of hate ............I mean a lot of people hate the great and funny pacinoyes too - ask me how much I care Anyway.........I think it was 22 nods and 5 wins from one of his other names in a post that was sent to me but I can't link to that and don't feel like looking so ......disregard if you like.
But you can use this as a rough estimate under his current nom de plume on MAR: Mar 10, 2018 at 10:27am - this took me a minute to find so no big deal, bold is added by me: "I'd say Washington has over 20 straight-up "great" film performances (as opposed to merely good, which takes him closer to 50). As you could easily give him 4th or 5th slot Oscar nominations for things like Devil In A Blue Dress or American Gangster or A Soldier's Story and it wouldn't look remotely odd or out of place. He could/should maybe be on 4-5 acting wins by now."

1992- Lead, Malcolm X (loses to Tim Roth in Reservoir Dogs) 1993- Lead, Philadelphia (loses to Tom Hanks in the same) 2001- Lead, Training Day (loses to John Cameron Mitchell in Hedwig and the Angry Inch) 2016- Lead, Fences (loses to Casey Affleck in Manchester by the Sea) 2017- Lead, Roman J. Israel, Esq. (loses to James McAvoy in Split)
Wow, just realizing I never give him a win, and I don't like that. Guess I really need to get on watching Glory and Cry Freedom (especially now that Glory is free). He comes really close for Training Day (iconic to me, surprised by the backlash here) as well as for Fences. I really didn't like Flight, but I loved him in Roman J. Israel, Esq. I was so pleasantly surprised watching that- recommend it to anyone who didn't bother checking it out when he got the surprise nom.

You keep doing everything in your power to start up this Pupdurcs vs Pacinoyes bullshit that no one but you is still creaming his jeans over, while I'm busy minding my own goddamn business. Get over it/me, you useless idiot. Just reading your antics elsewhere on the board (calling women Karens is racist and the rest of the crank bullshit you pollute this board with) is amusing to see someone so blissfully oblivious as to how many people who used to respect him, now think you are a complete ass. Rant over. Dickhead.

I'm pretty sure I've talked about Denzel more then any actor on this board simply by the virtue of how many topics get brought-up relating to him consistently. I think I've said all that I need to say right now about him, and his superb performances.

arguable wins for all three, today giving Auteuil/A Heart in Winter the '92 win, and '98 by weak-year default maybe....

Embarrased by what? Everything I said stands proudly. It's your petty and shitty editorializing that really stood out and compounded the issue. I give up. The whole board see's what a child you have become. I take some satisfaction from that. Bye. Try not to do this again next week. I think we are all pretty much over of it.
