I didn't see that coming. Dafoe is a inspired choice.

BEST ACTOR the nominees were: Antonio Banderas, Pain and Glory Willem Dafoe, The Lighthouse Robert De Niro, The Irishman Leonardo DiCaprio, Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood Adam Driver, Marriage Story Joaquin Phoenix, Joker Adam Sandler, Uncut Gemsand the winner is...
Willem Dafoe in The Lighthouse (11/45 votes) Not gonna lie, I was half-expecting Adam Sandler to win.

Sorry Tommen_Saperstein I was focusing more on the physical tech work like the sets and overall art direction than the VFX. Yeah the VFX were very good, aside from the horrendously wonky Leia stuff.

hmmm those acting wins: Cho - veeeery good, very nom-worthy, but better than Lopez and Zhao? No. Having excellent stunned reactions doesn't make you better than Lopez or Zhao, and I'm deadly serious! Pesci - very solid, but I will never get the hype. You had Pacino right there and you went with the funny guy. Don't get it. Franciosi - saw this one coming but it still really hurts. The amount of effort she puts into the role contrasts sharply with the fact that the screenplay not only is slightly problematic but also fundamentally slight and underbaked. Never could get past the sense of overcompensation coming from her histronics even if none of that's necessarily Franciosi's fault. It's just a very underwritten role that's also very loud. Best Actor - the best possible outcome outside of Driver, who I knew didn't have a chance because Marriage Story is crazy underrated around here for some reason. Dafoe is tremendous, but damn that's a close race. I wonder if Phoenix was 2nd... probably. Dodged a bullet gang.

Irishman had 11. Next closest was Portrait with 5. Really wasn't much of a competition, as expected.

Dafoe to Sandler:
Hark Triton, hark! Bellow, bid our father the Sea King rise from the depths full foul in his fury! Black waves teeming with salt foam to smother this young mouth with pungent slime, to choke ye, engorging your organs til’ ye turn blue and bloated with bilge and brine and can scream no more -- only when he, crowned in cockle shells with slitherin’ tentacle tail and steaming beard take up his fell be-finned arm, his coral-tine trident screeches banshee-like in the tempest and plunges right through yer gullet, bursting ye -- a bulging bladder no more, but a blasted bloody film now and nothing for the harpies and the souls of dead sailors to peck and claw and feed upon only to be lapped up and swallowed by the infinite waters of the Dread Emperor himself -- forgotten to any man, to any time, forgotten to any god or devil, forgotten even to the sea, for any stuff for part of Adam, even any scantling of your soul is Adam no more, but is now itself the sea

Great work guys. Glad to have voted for Dafoe and Blaschke. And even though I was hoping for an Irishman upset (just for a change) Parasite deserves everything... go Cho!!!

The lead acting categories were a bit unexpected tbh but maybe as a result of a crowd field ?
Hehe, in Bombshell there's at least two characters I can think of that under that oscar winning make up looks like they're transitioing into a person of opposite sex.
Recently saw For Sama on Netflix, and based on my very capricious judgement this one falls into unnecesary graphics, almost explotative, a rawness almost intolerable, this gives a lot of room for thought about the experience of the spectator in front of real suffering exposed on film, the limit between denouncement and explotation is a very thin line, and depends on a lot of factors, the previous scene, the next one, the seconds that it lasts, function, the distance of the camera, etc. I think The Cave had a better balance in that regard but Honeyland and Rolling Thuder (I suppose ) were better docs.
