The match-up Jack Lemmon in Glengarry Glen Ross and Gene Hackman in The Royal Tenenbaums.Neither nominated - that's what makes this fun doesn't it? - Lemmon was 67 when he gave this turn, Hackman was 71 ......Lemmon's performance was very classic Jack Lemmon and even had echoes of his Oscar winning Save The Tiger while Hackman's was far more wilder and not in his comfort zone as much at all. 2 all time top 10 actors I think it's safe to say on here ......but not rating the actors or who deserved a nod .........just the quality of these 2 performances. Lemmon won a National Board of Review Award.......Hackman a National Society of Film Critics..........how did these guys both miss.......but I digress!

Two magnificent performances. I also don't understand how AMPAS could've passed them by. Anyway, my vote here goes to Lemmon who, in my view, reached a new level of mastery in this performance - a remarkable thing to do when you've got so many movies behind you.

Both are masterful but I might slightly favour Lemmon here. It's unfortunate for him that 92 was such a competitive year for lead actor.
I'm surprised Lemmon never really did all that well in winning critics awards. The festivals loved him but the National Board of Review was his only big critics win.

Hackman is amazing but Lemmon's performance is my favorite in the category. Of all time. And I feel so comfortable saying that.

Tenenbaums is a comic triumph, as was his Heartbreakers perf from the same year - he's better in the former, but funnier in the latter. Still, picking Lemmon who is downright terrific in GRR, goes deeper, and is acting opposite several heavyweights.

Hackman for me -- sure wish that had been his swan song. For later day Lemmon I prefer 12 Angry Men but he's really great in Glengarry as well.

Could have sworn both Lemon and Pacino got nodded for GGR. Guess that's another "Oscar Mandela Effect" example. Despite being one of our more enthusiastic Wes Anderson fans due to his other films I've never actually seen Royal Tenenbaums.

Lemmon. Like him way more as an actor generally. He was even better a year later in Short Cuts.
