Marilyn on all 3 counts. Talent..... this is actually the closest one, I feel. Hepburn was pretty damn deserving of her win for Roman Holiday. My soul favors Deborah Kerr a little bit more in the year, but one of the years where the two most popular picks both did quite a lot for me emotionally so it was a good race between the 2. She's solid in Sabrina. Good in Breakfast at Tiffany's (used to be a stronger favorite tho) but she's not at the level of her nominees in that legendarily good lineup with Loren, Wood, and Laurie - especially not Loren. Some people thinks the performance of her career is The Nun's Story, that's fine and all.... but she doesn't have quite that strong a resonance for me. It's interesting such obvious Oscar bait like War and Peace and My Fair Lady didn't materialize in her performance being perceived as that strong - but I guess some people were tired of the sloggish epics by then. Those were getting somewhat of a bad rep from 1956-1965. Marilyn has a much smaller overall canvas, but she died before 40. But then, by 39 Audrey Hepburn's career was pretty much finished too and she already built a sturdier resume. I just think The Misfits is that good. It absolutely wastes the rest of her own work. It comes out on top of a year like 1961 - one of the strongest Best Actress oriented years of all time and that's no small feat to be #1 in that year. So yeah... I guess Marilyn has the higher high. She was really comedically on point in Some Like it Hot. And in Gentleman Prefer Blondes and How to Marry a Millionaire, she was delightful though the real turning point for her as a next level actress came in 1961 and she died suddenly after that. It's a true shame because she would've easily overtaken Audrey had she lived, and would've probably been first in line for Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? which allowed Taylor to build the essential benchmark to her career. But still... I'm going subjectively and my subjectivity favors Marilyn. , mostly because of the Misfits. I've praised that performance enough. Beauty.... Marilyn,. I can't see myself being attracted girly looking Audrey Hepburn. Too saccharine, too girly. Girlfriend's favorite actress. Not that Marilyn is the most beautiful woman ever, but if I saw her in real life, I'm gonna just take a guess that Marilyn is easily the more appealing aesthetic to my eyes. Iconic.... Marilyn. This one is not even close no matter how you slice it. Some people have seen Audrey's face, but that's it. They have a vague impression of her face and what she did. But lots of people don't even know her name. Just "that girl in old movies" and "girl with the fashion style from the old generation 50s spreads." Marilyn is like Jackie Kennedy, easily one of the Top 10 most famous women in the post WWII era.

Monroe was more beautiful and by far more iconic. But as sn actress I prefer Audray any day of the week.

Talent: Audrey Hepburn by far. Monroe has never impressed me much in any film I've seen her in and she doesn't seem to have much range. Hepburn, on the other hand, has several great performances under her belt, with Sabrina and Wait Until Dark being her best.
Beauty: I think Audrey Hepburn was one of the most beautiful actresses of classic hollywood. Monroe was also quite pretty, but I find her beauty much more conventional.
Iconic: Monroe by far. If you ask any random dude on the street, they'll probably have heard of Monroe and I doubt the same thing can be said about Audrey Hepburn.

I'd personally make a comparison between Hepburn and Grace Kelly more than Monroe.
Hepburn was classy and Monroe was sexy. Acting wise, they could be both good but rarely impressive.

Audrey was better at drama and even a little better at comedy in my book. Her comic timing in Roman Holiday was as good as it gets.
Audrey might be the most beautiful women of all time and Marilyn is in a contest with Sophie Loren for the sexiest woman of all time. I will go with Audrey because the classy brunettes are more my type.
Honestly, I don't know about the iconic question. They both are. Is that shot from Seven Year Itch really any more iconic than Audrey standing outside the Tiffany's window in the black dress with the pastry? One thing here is that while Marilyn is a big part of that mid-century boomer cultural narrative along with The Beatles, Brando, JFK, exc, I've never actually met a young person who's a fan of her. Whereas those shy bookworm college girls seemed to always be Audrey Hepburn fans, or at least like a couple of her movies. IDK, maybe it's just the people I hung out with. I get the feeling a lot of younger people know who MM is and can eyeball her but couldn't name a single movie she was in, whereas everyone knows Breakfast at Tiffany's, My Fair Lady, and Roman Holiday.
