Roughly the same age, and started in the mid 80s. Both straddle that supporting player/leading man line.
I'm voting Cheadle, on the basis of his awesome TV work in House of Lies alone.

We've had lots of interesting actor comparisons lately.
I had some pause here so I looked back at both their filmographies. They both have one great-ish performance in Chaplin and Hotel Rwanda, respectively. But after that RDJ wins. Outside of HR Cheadle has mostly been decent in supporting roles in genre films. I am interested in seeing Miles Ahead which I haven't yet which may alter that statement somewhat. But RDJ just has a much deeper roster of quality performances. Richard III, Zodiac, Tropic Thunder, then of course Iron Man. As big a Marvel critic as I am he's legit good in the first one selling the huge character arc and then carries the rest of those silly movies with his enormous charisma. Hard to imagine Cheadle being able to do that. When they recast Terrence Howard for him it seemed like people barely noticed which I guess some people might say is a positive but it's really not. When you play a role someone else has played you should bring something unique to it that makes people notice.

I don't care for Cheadle's War Machine, but...Devil in a Blue Dress, The Guard, Crash (yes I know I'm the only person who seems to like the movie), Black Monday (TV), Bulworth, that Sammy Davis Jr. TV movie, etc. I see an actor with enormous dexterity. Downey Jr. plays into smarmy smugster so often I think I'm tired of watching him act sometimes. And I thought he was downright bad in Zodiac, playing into his worst dramatic instincts that ring "petulant" loudly. The good ink he got from some critics I was baffled by.

Yeah, I'd argue that Cheadle has done more varied strong work than Downey Jr, but may be limited by the perception that he is more of a supporting actor (though he has done some very fine lead work). And Downey Jr has much more charisma. I think this a good match-up actually. They both havd different strengths, but ability wise I see them on a similar par.

Cheadle has done a lot of strong work that is underseen or on TV, that can give him an edge over Downey Jr. House Of Lies, Black Monday, Talk To Me, The Rat Pack, Rebound: The Legend Of Earl "The Goat" Manigault, Miles Ahead. The guy played Sammy Davis Jr and Miles Davis. He may not be anything close to the movie star that Downey Jr is, but if you take into account all his screen work, there's a strong argument that he has done more strong and varied work than Downey.

I'd rate Downey, Jr.'s two Oscar nominated performances over anything Cheadle has done (although Devil in a Blue Dress is a damn close third), but I think Cheadle is the much more interesting actor to watch.

RDJ was one of my favorite actors for a while, but I don't give a shit about MCU and he's spent literally the last decade of his career on it. The next 10 years of his career are going to be interesting. No idea whether he's going to do prestige stuff with auteurs, look for quick/easy paychecks, or just retire/barely work. All three seem equally plausible. I loved Cheadle too, but his film career in the last 10-15 years has been a bit of a a disappointment, even if he still does good work in other mediums. This is a tough call. I like them both, but they were basically anonymous to me for the last decade. I guess Cheadle since his recent work, even if more sparingly seen, seems more creatively interesting?

Don Cheadle has always been a fascinating actor - he's even great in Flight (2012) in a pretty nothing role he delineates marvelously so he's aces to me even as the roles have dried up and RDJ has just descended to snarky schtick personified......I'd like to see like him again but I am having a hard time seeing it tbh......

I hated his re-casting initially. Not only did he look nothing like Terrence Howard (who felt more equal to Downey Jr in the charisma stakes, so you could see his War Machine leading his own movie). He seemed bland in the Iron Man sequels compared to Howard. But Cheadle has really grown on me in the role. It probably happened sometime around Captain America: Civil War, but since then I've really liked him in the role. His dry and biting sarcasm and delivery works very well in an ensemble setting.

Cheadle is solid and always a welcome addition to any film he’s in. That said, I think Downey Jr takes this one rather easily. Sure, he’s been on cruise control for the last decade (although I think his Endgame performed was quite good and he was in no way phoning it in) but His highs have far outshined Cheadle’s.
