I thought it would be interesting to go back and try to determine which films would have filled out the field of 10 Best Picture nominees. For years with 9 nominees, you can only select 1 option. For years with 5, you will be able to select 5 options. Some years will be more obvious than others and some will have more options. This isn't based on personal preferences. These are realistic options based on precursor support and other Oscar nominations.
Here are the choices-
A Quiet Place (PGA nominee, SAG winner for Supporting Actress, Nominated for 1 Oscar)
Cold War (Nominated for 3 Oscars including Best Director, 4 BAFTA nominations)
Cold War did get the surprise Best Director nomination and Joanna Kulig was probably very close In the end, but I think it was If Beale Street Could Talk. It did underperform during the season, but I think some of that can be explained by Annapurna not having enough resources to promote it and Vice that well. Late screeners at SAG, and BAFTA being BAFTA for the most part. On the other hand, it was strong enough to get an acting win, and I’m sure that Jenkins still had a lot of support after Moonlight.
Maybe in the old system I could see A Quiet Place or Crazy Rich Asians getting in the tenth spot, but I could see #1 votes being a problem for them. On the other hand, I could see both IBSCT and Cold War having their share of passionate supporters.
