This one hurts. Any time a cast member of Alien dies, it hurts. But this guy was a huge staple of my childhood, and he deserved far more accolades and attention from the Academy than he got. Go easy, Ash.

RIP
A marvelous actor and a somewhat underrated Lear (though he won an Olivier Award for it) which is very meticulous and some found it a dull performance that I think is copied in a lot of ways by modern actors (Kevin Kline specifically seemed to base a lot of his Lear on it.......Frank Langella too a bit) and one of the greatest recent film lines that he knocks way out of the park from The Sweet Hereafter (1997):
"It turns to steaming piss"

"I can't lie to you about your chances, but... you have my sympathies."
One of the most perfectly delivered lines in film history. RIP legend.

He was great in Alien, and he helped to make old Bilbo such a sympathetic weary elderly character, not to mention his long stage career. He lived a long life, but man Parkinson's sucks. RIP Mr. Holm.

One of the greatest actor's from this country. He rarely performed on stage over the past couple of decades so I feel very fortunate to have seen him in The Homecoming back in 2001.
Anyone seen Dreamchild? Such a brilliant performance from him in that.
R.I.P.

Dreamchild is a fantastic Holm performance............that's amazing to see him in The Homecoming that late - his Tony is for that in 1967 (he played Lanny then) I assume here he was Max. That's a great switch ......... One of my favorite plays .....

Gosh, big loss with this one. Such an incredible talent and screen presence. Even in small roles like Brazil to powerful understated work like The Sweet Hereafter, he always brought it. I was just thinking about The Emperor's New Clothes yesterday and how I felt like rewatching it. He's my win for Dream Child. Rest in peace.

RIP.
One of my favourite performances from him, which hasn't been mentioned yet, was in The Emperor's New Clothes.

A damn fine talent and quite the loss. A marvel to behold in things like Chariots of Fire and The Sweet Hereafter... a real mean mother fucker in Alien... and the kindest presence in LOTR. Here's to a far green country.

He gave my fav Polonius perf that I've seen (despite being in a total weaker Hamlet movie). He has some dynamite lead perfs (Sweet Hereafter, even his Lear I found to be quite vivid). But best of all he almost always stood out in some way in his supporting roles and cameos, he made duller parts so distinctly interesting and they linger in your mind..... Wetherby, Dance with a Stranger, Another Woman, Brazil, etc. What a wonderful actor, RIP.

Boy this really hits hard. He has been such a terrific actor in many a film but I fell in love with this man when i saw him in Alien. How could I not fall in love with an actor covered in milk goo? That voice. Number 2 behind Sigourney in this film and makes a mark that no one will ever forget. Roll tape:
