Victoria and Abdul, Darkest Hour, and PTA-- so a really deep year And it doesn't help that the costume designer is a nobody with no previous noms elsewhere, and cinematography is already looking packed this year I'm not really feeling Victoria and Abdul (just saw the trailer, and it looks like the kind of bait the Academy used to love in the 90's, but doesn't get anywhere nowadays), but Darkest Hour and the PTA one will be heavy players. I doubt PTA is a heavy player and while Victoria looks awful, they still occasionally go for that middlebrow bait like Philomena (its still Frears, after all), and it could easily happen for Dench to snag a lazy, filler nom, or for the film to receive a costume nom

Well, they probably should invest more in The Beguiled's campaign then.

Ha, I never realized that but it's true They could realistically have multiple noms in half a dozen categories

Whether or not he can parlay it into a fourth win is an uphill battle, especially as this year is shaping up to be a strong one with some overdue narratives and potential critical favorites, but one can never count Daniel Day-Lewis out.

I'm sure he'll be in contention as long as the movie is seen He's basically a living legend and every film he does is an event for the industry, it'll just be a matter of how late the film is seen-- could potentially miss SAG, and even then it is apparently a very dark film which may be alienating to some audiences
