Please, share your thoughts on this film - I'm currently very intrigued by it - is it worth the over 2 hour time investment?

Awful film.Andie Macdowell's dialogue ended up being dubbed by Glenn Close, the producers weren't happy with her strong southern accent or something.

It was nominated for screenplay and BSA for the great Ralph Richardson so people are being a little hard on it (imo).......is it worth it? Well...........I dunno I watch a lot of garbage - I saw Jack & Jill TWICE in a theater.........for me it's got Ralph Richardson, and Ian Holm so of course it's worth it for us Richardsonofaguns (that's what we call ourselves ) but I live an odd life of no sleep and I'm going to live to be 200 so I have a lot of time to kill ........... ~6.5/10

Wonder if they were aware of that when they cast her? The irony here is of course that in the original Tarzan novels, Jane and her father are from the American South. I think I'm going to have to watch - my curiosity is far too piqued.

It's okay. It's not as good as it should be, as you feel the people who made it intended for it to be as Hudson's big follow up to his Oscar winning success, but if you like that kind of thing then it's worth watching. The most disappointing thing for me is how it feels sort of truncated, like we needed a longer version with more focus on the very early and later parts of the movie outside of the man in the jungle stuff which basically every Tarzan story is basically focused on, and for me gets too much of the screen time here.

it's a strange movie for how earnest it is and there are several sequences towards the end that really don't work, BUT there's something commendable about Hudson's sincere examination of the civilization-nature divide. The movie is often goofy but just as often beautiful, sometimes at the same time.
all that's irrelevant though because Ralph Richardson and John Alcott's cinematography (which is any bit as sumptuous as Barry Lyndon) make it worth watching on their own.

It's a good movie! My main takeaway from it was the great Rick Baker makeup effects on the apes - worth a watch just for them! Although do not believe the suggestion that it looks as gorgeous as "Barry Lyndon"

It's definitely worth watching. The production truly is exquisitely served, and it features two great performances from Sir Ralph Richardson and especially Sir Ian Holm. MacDowell is at her most luscious and beautiful here - just stunning. The gorgeous parts unfortunately don't add to a winning whole, but again, there's so much to admire here.
Viggo Mortensen was runner-up for Tarzan - don't you wish he had been cast instead?

Do you at least like MacDowell in Sex, Lies, and Videotape? Yes,I actually thought she was good in that. She was also really good in Ready or Not and Love after Love in particular, the latter of which might be her best ever performance. She has definitely grown as an actress over the years, but I think her Daughter probably has more innate talent.
