I thought it would be interesting to go back and try to determine which films would have filled out the field of 10 Best Picture nominees. For years with 9 nominees, you can only select 1 option. For years with 5, you will be able to select 5 options. Some years will be more obvious than others and some will have more options. This isn't based on personal preferences. These are realistic options based on precursor support and other Oscar nominations.
Let's start with last year.

The Two Popes did get 3 Oscar nominations, and was nominated by the Globes for Best Drama over other favorites, but I voted for Knives Out because I feel that it was very close to getting in. Admittedly I could be giving too much credit to voters since I do think that there was definitely an audience that would have voted for The Two Popes, the same kind of voters that ate up other McCarten written films, but I feel like The Two Popes came out too late and was an obvious third priority for Netflix who already had their hands full with The Irishman and Marriage Story.

Fun poll idea!
Going with Knives Out here, it really did seem to be quite strong at the end. I don't think it was TTP, it's hype was fading, it really underperformed compared to other McCarten biopics in the previous years and I won't be surprised if Pryce, the main vehicle for the movie initially, got in at like #5.

can't remember what all the nominees were because there are too fuckin many, but Knives Out wouldda been the 10th. Great combination of critical darling and crowdpleaser. I was predicting it for BP for a few weeks leading up to the noms, I'm confident it was next in line.

Knives Out feels like it got that late-season surge.

Now this is just making me wish they had it at 10 so Knives Out could've gotten in.

Now this is just making me wish they had it at 10 so Knives Out could've gotten in. Yeah, I really wish there had been 10, so it could have got in now. Even with Jojo Rabbit and Joker, two films I liked parts of, but didn’t really like as a whole, that would have been a pretty great lineup with nothing too bad imo like in most years.

I think it's Two Popes. 2 acting nods and a screenplay nod would have been good enough to get in sometimes even in the five nom days.

Voted for Knives Out.
While I love the 10 nominees thing, I have to get hypocritical here and say that I'm glad on this occasion that it wasn't 10, as it meant Knives Out missed out and didn't sully one of the very best Best Picture lineups.
