If it was Denzel, the category placement would have been a no brainer. I'm glad Lindo got the role but to me, it's hard to imagine that Spike didn't talk to Denzel about this film and this role, it's a big missed opportunity for "them". But I'm confident their fifth will be something great. Well..you were right fiosnasiob. Giancarlo Esposito did a interview with Collider that's coming out soon and he mentioned that the original all-star cast for the Da 5 Bloods would've been him (in the Norm Lewis part), Samuel L. Jackson, Denzel Washington, and John David Washington. And if other reports were true, Don Cheadle would've been the other member. So that was Spike's original cast, but unfortunately due to scheduling problems and other commitments they couldn't do it. Denzel would've been playing Paul (that Lindo ended up playing) and JDW would've obviously been in the David role (Jonathan Majors). collider.com/da-5-bloods-original-cast-denzel-washington/Damn...that would've been awesome to see and if Spike would've had that cast Netflix would've gave him more money and not fight with him about using 16mm cameras for the Vietnam War flashbacks. Having said that, I'm glad we got the crew that we did. They had great chemistry and they're all underrated actors who had a great opportunity to star in a film with good roles. Interesting.

Would have been amazing seeing all those actors interact for a whole movie, especially Denzel and Jackson and Denzel and John David. At the same time, kudos to Spike for just forging ahead and making his film. So many directors of his calibre might shelve a project like this if they don't get their initial dream cast, but Spike just gave that opportunity to some underappreciated actors instead like Peters and Lindo and still made something brilliant. Everyone, including the actors who didn't do it seem to be doing just great in their careers, so it's quite the happy ending. I feel like Spike and Denzel's 5th collaboration won't be too far away, and it should be something special.

Jackson and Denzel haven't done anything together since Mo Better Blues and that was just the scene at the end when he gets beat up. I don't think they've done anything where they acted off each other. But yeah, I think the Lee/Denzel 5th collab is coming soon, and maybe Jackson might be in that as well.

Wow, I had no idea that was the original casting plan, if anything it makes me want to see Lee and Denzel work together again with Jackson, especially since I just rewatched Inside Man, and good as it is, it would feel incomplete as their last collaboration. Although I love the cast as is, that would have been a fantastic superstar lineup.

Now thinking about it, if Lee was able to get his original wishlist cast, the film probably wouldn't have been at Netflix and one of the major studios would've grabbed it. Although with Covid-19 it would've been in a similar predicament with the other studio films that couldn't be released by a streaming service and didn't want to release a big studio picture with these guys on VOD.

Who knows how long we'd have to be waiting to see Da 5 Bloods if it was a studio movie because of Covid-19.

I remember when we were debating about Netflix/Lee making a mistake releasing their Oscar contender on a random date like June 12th and now looking at it this was probably one of the best film releases/timing ever considering the climate right now.

Yes..........I had posted this comment below 10 days ago in the original thread (the pre-reviews one). The key thing about this is not only the June 12th release itself but also in how other key dates tie into that June 12th date - Presidential election in 5 months.......the Academy date change which is going to lead to a flurry of articles that say things like "don't forget DA 5 Bloods which defined the year" which are de facto articles of support and.......by the time of the next Oscars we are almost at Malcolm X's 30th anniversary which I'm sure will involve a big re-release in some way. This is why working in the movie industry is so much dependent on luck and not skill or business savvy - whether it's good or bad (or in this case tragic) - Just ask the team trying to handle a West Side Story release right now ********************************************************************************************************** Post by pacinoyes on Jun 10, 2020 at 2:12am
Great article on the film with background on how it came together.
Isn't it funny how when this date was revealed many of us (me included) raised eyebrows at that date as a serious Oscar player and now how it is insanely topical and could not possibly have a better date to be looked at as an Oscar player?
Life is funny in how it changes things...........and I mean that in the sad, not laughing at all way of "funny"

I usually like Spike’s films, but this did not work for me at all. On the nose dialogue, ugly cinematography, and a waste of every cast member here (outside of Lindo, who’s character changes still give me whiplash yet somehow he makes it work). What a disappointment.

Don't have anything to add that hasn't already been said. This is one of the messiest films I've seen in a looooong time. Already talked about Lindo in a different thread but I'll reiterate: the performance only half-works for me because it's so incredibly highwire (the Brechtian monologues, the fits of rage and grief, it's really a lot) and there's too much bloat that steps on its toes. This concept of a damaged Trump-supporting black man is very intriguing on paper but I really don't think whatever this was (an action movie? adventure? hangout?) was the best way to explore it. Didn't care for the setting, hated the looks of those flashbacks (looked like an Instagram filter) and the look of the thing in general was pretty bland--it definitely looked like a Netflix film. Those landmine activists could've been axed from the film completely. And Clarke Peters's Vietnamese girlfriend & daughter, god they were pointless. And that scene with Eddie and the landmine... the way Lee shot that scene telegraphed exactly what was going to happen ten seconds before it did. And then Jean Reno comes in at the end looking like a villain in MacGyver episode with his white suit and expositional monologue and band of trigger-happy baddies who are given sympathetic motivations but still treated like your average action movie cannon fodder when the shit hits the fan. Don't what else to say. Some things I liked, some things I didn't, but ultimately this is not my kind of movie. I think Lindo has a good shot at an actor nod and possibly win, but this being a major BP contender would only be a testament to how fucked-up and weird this year is more than anything else (and a testament to how much people hate Trump, but will that be relevant anymore next spring?). I can't imagine it having a chance in hell in a normal awards season. Incredibly messy but also surprisingly old-fashioned in some of its plot elements.

just a quick thought on its awards potential... the deadline extending into Spring 2021 really hurts this films chances. Blackkklansman couldn't survive the summer-to-awards season jump despite the initial hype and the film's accessibility and it really only takes two or three films to take over the buzz. There will be fewer contenders next season but that'll be canceled out by the deadline postponement. Will there still be hype for Da 5 Bloods in January? February? March? Depends on what else is out but I doubt it. and that poll of the 100 critics... that means nothing, especially this far out. All the films that were supposed to have been released in spring and summer were pushed back except Netflix and a few VOD releases so there's basically nothing to choose from. I mean, The Invisible Man placed third and we're not calling that a BP contender, I don't think

Agree and also the way the year has gone the culture created a hook/environment for this film rather than the movie creating an environment........that's fine often but it doesn't bode well outside of Lindo (who could win imo) this year - the cultural moment won't link with the movie as much months from now.......when I talk movies I've liked this year (not much!): Incitement (Israel) .......and less but I liked them The Audition, Tommaso ...... I'm shocked how few have seen them or heard of them even care to know about them at all ..............but you know everyone's head is elsewhere in 2020 - and so is the way people are seeing and working there way through them. I like Da 5 Bloodsa bit more than you maybe - ~7 or so - and think it will have some heat but it's just not a consensus building film to contend in a lot of categories people are representing as. People are going to start looking elsewhere at a certain point.......

I was really worried the movie was going to get lost in the shuffle by the end, but it seems to have found a large following. Of course being released on a popular streaming service helps, it was probably going to do BlacKKKlansman numbers at best, if it had been released theatrically, but still this proves there is interest.

Acclaimed author Viet Thanh Nguyen, whose sublime novel The Sympathizer won the Pulitzer Prize, wrote an op-ed about Da 5 Bloods and how despite it trying to tell a different side of the typical Vietnam story, winds up just falling in to the same exact pitfalls. And you know something? He's got a point. The more that I think on Da 5 Bloods as time passes, the more I think that the script really missed a trick with how it sidelines the Vietnamese characters (particularly Vinh, who should be rights have had a much bigger role in the story, and who should've definitely fulfilled the function that the minesweepers did, and to have him act as both a symbol of recovery and mediation with the Bloods as well as a potential adversary for Paul) and reduces them to token stereotypes, either as whores, passive guides, or bodies to be stacked up in a final shoot-out. I still quite liked the film, its performances and its direction, but that script . . .

Switched phone plans and have Netflix now so I checked this out.
I think this is Lee's best work and the first good movie I've seen this decade. Malcolm X is more ambitious and aims higher but in terms of just firing on all cylinders this is his best film. The shootouts and war scenes are particularly well directed.
There area few nitpicks, the cutaways to real life stuff were a bit tedious, and it was a bit too homage-y in spots (namely to Treasure of Sierra Madre and Apocalypse Now) but those things are just part of Lee's style so it's a cost of doing business with him. Unlike some people I did not mind the MAGA hat. He did not overtly draw too much attention to it and it always popped up at the right moments and was a nice motif.
I also think we have our best actor winner in Lindo. All the main guys are good but he was next level. It also has to be in the BP/BD conversation as well. Unless something surprises me Mank is the one thing I could see surpassing it for me later in the year. If Lee wins it could be a rare "career achievement" win simultaneously for a movie that actually deserves it. Lee really seems to be reinvigorated.

That's the correct choice but it makes the road towards the win harder. I feel like he would've easily won in Supporting.

It's the best move, because they're probably going to campaign Boseman in Supporting for Ma Rainey's Black Bottom and with the sentiment around him right now with his shocking passing they feel like he has a great shot in that category. It seems like everyone is harping on Hopkins winning for The Father right now and Lindo is the underdog but Lindo has the raves to get nominated and it'll be an interesting race. I think Lindo will get alot of critics support/awards with Hopkins starting to win the industry awards like Phoenix last year. I don't see Oldman being a factor in the race because he just won a few years ago. It's coming down to Hopkins or Lindo with Kaluuya being a dark horse sight unseen. But I'm happy is getting a Best Actor run, it's long overdue for him to get shine for his underrated career.

Hopkins's raves are pretty damn near what I'd consider "undeniable" (a word that is thrown a laughably huge amount of time, but those reviews do warrant the term), so I think Netflix might be contenting themselves with getting Lindo nominated (rightfully so) in the category he belongs in, while focusing their attention on a supporting run for Boseman.
