Did anyone here see that Patrick Melrose series, by the way? His portrayal of self-destruction was pretty wild, and like nothing I've seen in his films. He was very good as Sherlock too.

He is the best TV actor in the world if there is such a thing - he destroys when he does TV - and he's pretty stellar on stage from what I've seen - 3 nominations and a win for the Olivier (I've seen 2 that have been filmed, both great including Hamlet) .......he hasn't carved out a movie niche quite but he's always good or better and has an Oscar nod. The ~40+ year old class in the UK is stacked - Whishaw, McAvoy, Hardy, Fassbender, him and a whole lot more (Rory Kinnear dammit!) - he's topping them all in TV easily and if he could pivot into a type-groove on cinema he could be that generations..........Fiennes maybe? That's what he's shooting for I reckon.

Mendes can be great, but that part in 1917 was a waste of time for Cumberbatch. Daldry, Boyle, maybe Joe Wright again with a bigger part than what he had in Atonement, Mike Leigh, Steve McQueen, Ken Loach, etc.
