I don't know why, but Wim Wenders only missing Berlin is funny. I know, right? Like Godard missing Cannes.

flasuss , stephen Here it is! The living directors who are one short of winning the top prize at all three festivals: Terrence Malick (Venice) Wim Wenders (Berlin) Roman Polanski (Venice) Mike Leigh (Berlin) Jafar Panahi (Cannes) Costa-Gavras (Venice) Zhang Yimou (Cannes) Jean-Luc Godard (Cannes) Paolo Taviani (Venice) Ang Lee (Cannes) Gianfranco Rosi (Cannes) If anyone is missing, do let me know. Doing the Lord's work, my man. If I had to rank the likeliness of who will be the first of this bunch to take the triple crown: 1. Panahi 2. Leigh 3. Wenders 4. Lee 5. Yimou 6. Malick 7. Rosi 8. Godard 9. Costa-Gavras 10. Taviani (is he still making movies now that his brother's gone?) 11. Polanski I'll keep Polanski slightly higher on the ranking, but the rest of it looks pretty good.

Just checked what beat J'accuse at Venice last year and I really wish I hadn't. I think I'd bet on Malick or Zhang Yimou to first get that third win. Yimou has at least three movies in the can so the odds one is great and plays at Cannes next year is possible. Any chance Malick's The Last Planet is ready for Venice later this year?? Well, "that certain movie" made headines & a record after winning Golden Lion.
No words on The Last Planet yet, except that filming was finished last December, so fingers crossed

Penélope Cruz is just missing Berlin now, but since they've moved to genderless awards, I'm not sure anyone on this list would complete their Triple Crown if they're only missing Berlin.

Yeah...Bardem, Huppert, Loren, Mirren, Phoenix & Redgrave are the ones missing Berlin. Let's see who gets there first!
Also, I know it's too early to say this; but it's gonna be more difficult for male actors to win in Berlin.

Could the next recipient be in this photo ? ** Edit. Never mind, just saw she's missing Venice not Berlin... still very intrigued by this, she doesn't appear on screen very often nowadays...

Removing Albert Finney (RIP) and adding Cruz and Germano... Are we missing any others now? Isabelle Adjani (Venice) Javier Bardem (Berlin) Maggie Cheung (Venice) Tom Courtenay (Cannes) Penélope Cruz (Berlin) Benicio Del Toro (Venice) Gérard Depardieu (Venice) Bruce Dern (Venice) Elio Germano (Venice) Shahab Hosseini (Venice) Holly Hunter (Venice) Isabelle Huppert (Berlin) Sophia Loren (Berlin) Shirley MacLaine (Cannes) Helen Mirren (Berlin) Joaquin Phoenix (Berlin) Charlotte Rampling (Cannes) Vanessa Redgrave (Berlin) Meryl Streep (Venice) Jean-Louis Trintignant (Venice) Interesting to note that while Huppert and Mirren are both missing Berlin, they've both won the Honorary Golden Bear (or Berlin's lifetime achievement prize). pacinoyes Mattsby

Keep an eye on Germano this year, he's gotta new one with vet director Gianni Amelio who's had six films compete at Venice before.

Here's a fun little stat (obliterate me if I'm wrong)....
Only three living actors have as many as FOUR wins from any mix of Cannes/Berlin/Venice..... Huppert, MacLaine, and Sean Penn.

How is this a thing? Leo at this point couldn't get a film at Berlin unless he demanded it in his contract. Something shouldn't be a crown if it's optional.

Yeah, a lot of great actors and stars don't really give a shit about the European festival circuit, while it's a bread and butter thing for some. I mean, as a Denzel fan, it's cool to to know he won the Berlin Silver Bear for Best Actor twice in his career. But I don't think he or his management have given a shit about the European Festival circuit since the 90's.
