For most of my life I thought Robert Shaw won Best Supporting Actor for Jaws when it turns out he wasn't even nominated.

I remember laughing when an interviewer on NPR said during an introduction that Denzel had won 2 Oscars for Cry Freedom and Malcolm X.

always amazed to rediscover that Hush... Hush, Sweet Charlotte was nominated for seven Oscars and none of them were for Bette Davis.

I always forget Pure Imagination wasn't nominated for original song - I thought it had won for years.

Another good one is that I was shocked to learn when Goldfinger wasn't nominated for best original song in 1965. Like wait, what?

I forget Idris Elba wasn't nominated in 2014 and Morgan Freeman was in 2010.

It's a joke. I'm joking.

Amanda Plummers Oscar win for The Fisher King as the emotional core that brings Robin Williams out of his funk and oh wait just kidding it was Mercedes Ruehl who did nothing and won an Oscar because I still don't know.

I always thought Jack Nicholson was nominated for The Departed.
Despite the fact that 2006 was the year I was most invested in movies, seems strange looking now The Departed only had Wahlberg nominated. Would've thought Nicholson for sure was nominated. I do, however, know that DiCaprio was actually nominated for Blood Diamond as I kept a mental note of that well. But I would've thought surely it's been shorter than 18 years since Nicholson was last nominated.... but nooooo, Nicholson's last nod was About Schmidt, which is hard to imagine.
However, if there's one nod I forget Nicholson actually earned...... it's Prizzi's Honor. Doesn't seem all that relevant a performance for him and usually I remember Huston's win and the 80s-ness as the stronger residue.

I always thought Jack Nicholson was nominated for The Departed.
It's literally amazing he wasn't nodded for The Departed - BAFTA nodded, SAG nodded, Globe nodded, his first time ever in a Scorsese film that won BP - he's essentially playing the Pacino/Hoffa, Newman/Fast Eddie "legend" role earlier there (more like Pacino). What's really amazing about Nicholson is that of his 12 nominations he "almost" never missed a nod for any he was close for - unlike say his peers (or even guys with a lot of nods even) where you could name several nods they were maybe passed over for - in that way Nicholson really was "Mr. Hollywood" - every time he was close he got the nod........BUT Nicholson missing for Batman/The Departed really does seem odd to miss for given his stature and the movies success at the box office or with the Academy and his precursors. Now I don't nod him for either Batman/The Departed myself but really when you look at the way that played out for Jack I'd call those snubs ......if anybody ever catches Jack's nod record (DiCaprio has the best shot at it to me) you could legitimately say he maybe should have 14 nods........though DiCaprio has this same thing for that same movie (!)

Batman was a comic book movie, so I get why that was passed over. The only nominations it felt strange he wasn't nominated for is Hoffa and The Departed. The former because it had to have had award ambitions (though maybe the film getting underwhelming reviews had to do with that), and the latter because like you say Nicholson never gets passed over when he's doing films THAT major.

The former because it had to have had award ambitions (though maybe the film getting underwhelming reviews had to do with that), and the latter because like you say Nicholson never gets passed over when he's doing films THAT major. He's simultaneously the most overnodded actor (maybe, I'd say Denzel and Robert Duvall are overnominated too imo) and the most oddly slapped in the face undernominated one - a comic book movie got an Oscar nomination the next YEAR as Batman (Pacino).......in 92 for Hoffa he was arguably not nodded because they didn't want to give him 2 nods.......yet Pacino (again) did it that year (the first to do it for males for unique roles). Years later - 2 people won for the Joker......Pacino (AGAIN!) got nodded for playing Hoffa........and um MAR put Gene Hackman above him on a poll (I love Gene, but nah.....).........he walked away with 3 Oscars which is a club the De Niro, Denzel and Hanks should join in the next 5 years ........his shadow hangs over American acting in a lot of ways. Side note: I see A LOT of similarities between his Hoffa and The Departed - both are performances that peak early and as they go on seem more mannered and affected.......and both are performances where he is playing a "legend" (or "the Rock star" as he's referred to in The Departed).

Overnodded and never got passed over when he was expected to win a nod...
That's EXACTLY why him getting snubbed for The Departed felt so weird!
