Didn't want to do this as a poll - there's too many names to scroll through anyway - but just curious who are the TWO you'd pick: Any age......any country .......1 of each. Several big ones have turned 70 in just the last few years (Jeff Bridges, Sigourney Weaver, Sissy Spacek) and most of the GOAT ones in our polls for US/UK - well those legends have won plenty of accolades by now so let's give those old codgers a rest for once. I'm going Huppert obviously for me and Day-Lewis (in their 60s).......but if you want to say DDL out of the race now then.......maybe Bardem (51) ......I'd have to give the male some thought tbh.

Easy one for me. If we go by the active ones (meaning, no DDL), then it's Hanks and Blanchett.
Simple!!

Denzel Washington (by far at this point) for actors. Active or inactive. Take out age restriction, it's still probably him.
Probably Nicole Kidman for actresses.

That's what happens with me and the tv series: Unlike the movies, I tend to watch them long after their release date...

Gary Oldman for males. I have to think for actresses, as my favorite one will turn 100 in July.

Actor: Denzel Washington, mostly for consistently and the fact that his movies are generally very entertaining. Hanks, and Dafoe are runner-ups.
Actress: A bit harder, but probably Julianne Moore, especially as of late.

Without a doubt Tabu is the best living actress currently as far as I'm concerned. I don't remember any movie where she doesn't deliver. Everything about her is just perfect. I'm not sure about actors. Dafoe is a pretty sexy choice I can get behind.

I’d probably say Dafoe and Binoche who in a way are kinda similar — both have some duds from their occasional sellout roles they do to sustain careers of mostly doing weird shit with auteurs who don’t make money — and you kinda have to admire that too.

I'll say Joaquin Phoenix for actors, but the more I see of Willem Dafoe, the more he becomes a threat to be my new favourite actor.
Nicole Kidman for actresses.

Interesting point for this thread: Willem Dafoe is the most mentioned male so far who was way down at 42 (!) in our GOAT poll and the highest ranking male under 70 in our GOAT poll was Phoenix who has 1 mention so far.......and in those 2 years Dafoe has 2 big and beloved performances on here .........and Phoenix won an Oscar. Mental note: Need to do a Willem Dafoe vs. Joaquin Phoenix poll ...........hmmmmmmmm

Dafoe is (currently) popular on a board like this because he's having a moment in time in his career and is an arthouse favorite. I've seen it happen all the time since early IMDB (remember when everyone was on Depp and Downey Jr, before they got too popular and still did art films. No one talks about once beloved arthouse leading men like Bardem or Mortensen like they used to). In places like this, actors become flavor of the month for a year or two, as if nobody in the world is better than them, then suddenly it's "I never knew that guy" . It's an incredibly fickle thing, and if this goes as it usually does, in a year or two, some new board favorite on a decent run and arthouse sensibilities that's not too popular with the general public will be annointed (bets on Sam Rockwell?) as the "best actor working" (at least on this board), and Dafoe will be left behind. Before Joker, Phoenix would probably have got the most mentions easily (he ticked all the arthouse boxes). But he's now getting too popular/mainstream after leading a billion dollar superhero movie to be as obvious a pick. Dafoe is a very fine character actor and arguably one of the best working, but realistically he has zero currency in this debate that I've seen, outside this board and like 15 people on it. Like, at all. People do not talk about Dafoe in that light outside this board that I've seen, so he's an anti-mainstream pick. But he's genuinely good and not mainstream, so the appeal here is obvious.

How about one of my favorite actors - Sergio Castellitto (in his 60s and a world class talent - sort of an older Bardem in a way) and since we're killing our idols how about going really young Luca Marinelli - the Ryan Gosling of Italy - arguably the world's best actor under 40 period perhaps (?) Where are the Italian posters on this board to advocate for their countrymen at least (!) even if Marinelli too young in 2020 (but as with Haenel that upside is huge) Marinelli below:

For males, I'd say DiCaprio, Denzel, and Gosling right now are. Bardem was in there, but the second half of the 2010s just didn't work for him (evem though he's not terrible in crap like The Gunman); hopefully he bounces back with Dune and the Cortes miniseries. Oldman is a great actor, but he only occasionally displays it these days, and certainly not to the extent he did in his youth, so he's disqualified. I have no idea for the women. Isabelle Huppert in The Piano Teacher is one of the top 5 performances I've ever seen, but (I've said this before) I've never been awed by anything else I've seen her do, so either I have yet to stumble upon a confirmatory great performance that's eluded me, or she's a one-hit wonder to me on some level. I'll always love Julianne Moore, but she's cooled for me. I think Winslet will back and surprise everyone, but she's made too many poor choices in recent years. If she re-summons 2008 Winslet, I'll put her at the head of the pack. Evan Rachel Wood is a great actress, but the random indies and Westworld are keeping her down; she should be taking jobs from Emma Stone/Margot Robbie/Jennifer Lawrence. Andrea Riseborough is a consummate chameleon, but I don't even bother watching alot of her stuff. Pfeiffer was great.

What are the musts? .....should I look for the Taviani or Martin Eden? As they say in Italy, questo o quello?
He's also in the FX miniseries Trust that I know at least Viced has seen

He's also in the FX miniseries Trust that I know at least Viced has seen Start with Don't Be Bad and Martin Eden but he doesn't have too much and like Haenel he's more about the totality of effect rather than home run performances just yet........you'll see he can go across a lot of material and the camera just loves this guy - the Tavianis used him for his looks in their romantic film to hold the center. He can be the lead.......be in ensembles - only a little older than Haenel (I think) and he's making the move US films awfully quick. He's sort of the closest thing to what Roman Duris was and sometimes still is when not spreading himself too thin: a talented guy who can be great or be used to suggest things filmmakers want that's also separate from his acting talent (looks, sensitivity, warmth, danger).

Yup, I love Dafoe as a performer, and as an actor, and I always think he's almost always think he's trying to challenge himself with the parts he picks, but I won't deny, he's really more of an artsy snob kinda choice. To your average person on the street, they probably still recognize him as The Green Goblin, best.
