Mad Max: Fury Road winning 6 Oscars is pretty damn inspired to me.

Beasts of the Southern Wild noms I'm still sour it was the only BP nom to go home empty handed. It should have won score.

The expansion of the best picture field has allowed for some cool options, and District 9 getting in there makes me so happy to this day.

Demián Bichir is incredible in A Better Life and I can't believe he was nominated for it.

It may have been mentioned already, but Pat Morita for The Karate Kid always delights me.

Charlotte Rampling, 45 Years (it's easy to forget she didn't get a single nomination from either BAFTA, Globes or SAG...) Best Director: Pawel Pawlikowski, Cold War Willem Dafoe, At Eternity's Gate Whiplash; Best Picture. Best Director: Bennet Miller, Foxcatcher

I guess some will disagree about how inspired the nomination actually was considering that Conrad L. Hall's work has pretty much been like catnip for voters, but I do find his nod for "A Civil Action" to be quite inspried indeed. In a year of war epics and lush period dramas, to have this small lawyer movie rounding up the Best Cinematography category is pretty awesome. Especially because the work itself is indeed remarkable. I rewatched the film a couple of days ago and the visuals are terrific. The lighting is exquisite - Hall finds a way to fill almost every shot with his signature silver lights. And you won't find a movie with better lit glasses of water!

I love that the 1943 version of Phantom of the Opera won cinematography -- such a cool choice.

Debatable whether you can call it "inspired" because she was hot on nominations for President's Men and Kramer and the film wasn't nominated for anything else so you wonder if they even watched it, but Jane Alexander's nomination for Testament is one of the most deserved nominations in the history of the category.

how cool is it that the first woman nominated for best director was a radical feminist Italian whose film didn't even go to any major festivals? Giannini's nomination is inspired too but Lina Wertmueller was trailblazing for Seven Beauties.
