Sending a Top 50 is aiding Coop's experiment but it is not needed for the actual presentation. He's just referring to the film Mesrine. It was released in 2 parts, sort of like Che. I don't know....I count both Mesrine and Che as just one film myself, but people have already been separating Kill Bill so we'll just go about it that way. Unless everyone wants to do a poll? I'd much rather include films like Che, Kill Bill, Mesrine and LOTR as just one film. I think we've always separated them in the past though.

Also, we're definitely separating things like Kill Bill and LOTR. The ballots I have received have already done that, and it's how we've always done it anyway.

FYCWendy and LucyThis is the only good dog movie ever made that I know of ... and yes I know calling it a "dog movie" is super reductive but you get my point. An amazingly poignant and emotionally overwhelming wallop of a film featuring a career-best Michelle Williams. A simple story beautifully told by Kelly Reichardt sure to resonate with literally anyone...

FYC25th HourIt's peak Spike, certainly the best thing David Benioff ever touched, and Norton giving his career-best performance playing off an impeccable supporting ensemble ... I mean what's not to love really. Released in the aftermath of 9/11, 25th Hour is an incredibly urgent, immediate film that really captures the mood and essence of the decade, at least the early part of it, like few other films from it. There's a hell of a lot of anger boiling over in these 24 hours, watching our protagonist's world come crashing down around him as he runs out of time. One fo the very best purely emotional film experiences of the 2000s and without a doubt one of the decade's masterpieces...

FYCY Tu Mamá También
I once read that J.K. Rowling wanted Alfonso Cuarón to direct Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban *because of* (the incredibly sex-filled) Y Tu Mamá También because it was evidence that Cuarón understood teens ... I have no idea if that's actually true or not, but it at least sounds good. It sounds like it should be true, and it speaks to the strength of this film (which still stands as Cuarón's masterpiece -- come at me), that beyond being a heavily erotic road trip, it is a deeply caring and understanding examination of the transition from the carefree teen years into adulthood. It's the best coming-of-age film of the 21st century I think quite easily, managing to showcase the spontaneous joy of that one last fleeting summer with old friends along with the deterioration of that comfortable familiarity in the face of growing up and moving on as everything we previously loved starts to vanish. Not to mention it's one of the only coming-of-age films I've seen not afraid to dive head-first into exploring sexuality in, uh, a lot of detail, focusing on the character's physicality and the burnout of that childish energy as it develops into something more adult. A personal favorite of mine, and I hope it is for enough other people that we can get this one a good placement...

A personal favorite of mine, and I hope it is for enough other people that we can get this one a good placement... Yeah man.....this film is beautiful. It's certainly Cuarón's most personal of works - more so than Roma - because he captures the human psyche at it's most honest and curious. The growth of Bernal and Luna's characters showcase Cuaron's true recognition of what it really means to develop a new way of thinking......of rationalizing the circumstances that are present in a different light. Luisa [Maribel Verdu] also has a transcendent power over the two which further fuels that fiery seductive attraction because of her strong personality. And as teenage brats without any real morality or respect, these two suddenly come across a Woman who was frail and complex beforehand...... but when allowed to be let off the leash, she's completely irresistible to the point where that juvenile naivety is replaced by wholesome lust and augmented understanding. One of the most genuine coming-of-age films ever made.....and I absolutely love the way it's objectively shot as if the camera is just a witness to proceedings without being an intruder; everything just unfolds quite gracefully.

FYCMiami ViceMichael Mann had a tremendous decade in the Aughts -- including the masterpiece Collateral (co-FYC!) and the very underrated Ali and Public Enemies -- the highlight of which was the largely misunderstood Miami Vice that has undergone an insane amount of reevaluation in recent years and has become a Mann stan fan favorite. And it really is a film where the appreciation has to come from reevaluation and I can speak from personal experience. For one you kinda have to watch it with subtitles (so much mumbling!). But also there's really nothing to prepare you for the sort of film it's going to be on a first viewing, it's incredibly disarming in its fragmented approach, yet once you go in knowing what to expect and let yourself become absorbed and immersed in its world it slowly reveals itself as the beautiful accomplishment that it really is. Mann is known for producing complex, artful, and emotional works under the guise of a "genre flick" big studio production and Miami Vice exemplifies that tendency better than anything else. Likely at first misconstrued as a soulless reboot of a beloved '80s series for the sake of profit, but Miami Vice's concerns aren't with any sort of fun in the sun nostalgia ... instead Mann will experiment with cinematography and editing and everything else at his disposal to tell his intimate, heartbreaking story. In terms of visual splendor and innovation, it's one of the most breathtaking accomplishments of the decade. If you haven't seen it awhile and maybe dismissed it at first, consider giving it another look...

FYCThe Aughts were an interesting decade for Spielberg ... including (at least) three of his best films. I think all of these are somewhere just outside my top 25 unfortunately, but they should all have spots...

FYC
Yi Yi
Is this two Edward Yang posts in a row for me? Why yes, yes it is -- Yi Yi is maybe top five of its decade, maybe top ten of the century so far, one of modern cinema's masterpieces. A breathtaking family drama of potent emotion and intimacy presented at an epic scale -- the exact thing that makes Yang's cinema so special. A "slow" film that never feels like it, just let yourself become immersed in it and you'll find there's no other experience quite like it.
Oh, and did you know that the entire goddamn film is on Youtube? Because I only just found this out, but it's true! So, you really have no excuse. It's right here. Watch it:
