Rebecca Ferguson! It was nice to see her really chomp down on a good role after kind of coasting post-breakout. Hope she gives more performances like that one. Glad to see ScarJo get some love too as I felt she was the MVP of that film personally (even though I totally get and agree with the flack behind her as a person).
I'm not even sure what Julie Walters was in last year but I'll have to look into that.
What did you think of Diana Lin in The Farewell? Zhao would never get anywhere near my personal lineups, but I thought Lin was excellent.
I loved Lin, and in a weaker year she'd be a very strong contender for a spot. But I just fell in love with Zhao's effortless work.
I think my problem with Zhao is that the script doesn't give her much to chew on. It's a really good perf (and she acts so much like my late grandma that it's eerie), but Nai Nai never really gets any development. She's static and devoid of conflict, whereas her son and daughter-in-law have to struggle with their western and eastern halves colliding with each other.
In a way, Nai Nai is a living MacGuffin, existing so her family has motivation to go through their own arcs. Zhao is commendable and puts as much into the role as she can, but Lin gets meatier material and runs with it.
I am so glad you agree with my opinions. That is, after all, what they are for.

I only recognized Monos because I literally just watched it the other day but everything else stands out pretty clearly. You got your Ad Astra, your Nightingale, your John Wick, Ford v Ferrari, 1917, Uncut Gems, Lighthouse, Monos... is that it? Near total overlap between the categories as far as I can tell which is interesting.
still miffed there's no damn Aeronauts. The weather sound effects were sublime.
Brilliantly put together montages for Sound there stephen. "Goddamn faaahhttss"
I do agree, at least perhaps in a spoiler tag under the video if you would write in the names of the films that would be helpful for those of us wishing to seek out the ones we haven't seen, though at least it seems I've seen everything here so far (except apparently The King).
Also shame Waves didn't make the cut for your Mixing line-up. That's got to be some of the best Mixing work I've heard in a long time (but tough when Lighthouse and Uncut Gems are also giving damn fine work too).
