She is.... a favorite. Some people on IMDB don't take to her for some reason. Maybe a part of that is because she's a bit underseen, or it's just she's a bit more of a diva with her technique, but I feel in love after watching Frances and I never looked back.
I think she's better than Streep though lately I've come to appreciate Streep more. The main difference is that Lange was mostly awesome in the 80s bunched up in one decade where Streep has more longevity having done great stuff in every decade. While she got drastically weaker after Adaptation., Lange went off the map for a while until Feud. That performance is better than anything Streep has done in either TV or Film in the last 18 years.
Adaptation. was the last turning point. After that you began to see Streep become like a different actor than the one we were used to for 20 years prior to that. So the 2nd half of her career is kinda........boring. The Post is the only one I can think of that I'd argue might be great, but that's also kind of a weak year so maybe it stands out for that reason.
I give Lange about 8 or 9 nods.

Love her - and while she's not Streep, her whole thing is she was never anyone but herself and no one could replicate her (or her life) at all. She's a great actress because she simply started to carry herself like she was one whether anyone agreed or not (which happens a lot in music btw but almost never in the movies) - she did this at every stage of her life too. She was a genuine wild child, she wasn't going to acting first- she was interested in dance, was a model and really liked photography and she learned how to act from those angles - she has some some acting training but not that much (and odd training like mime) and that separates her - so everything she does is sort of off her looks (gorgeous) and intuitive and expressive - like dance. That is why she can go really, really over the the top - her "control" as an actress is never really set like it is for others - it makes her thrilling and unpredictable and technically messy (she doesn't care, she hates accents more than pacinoyes does!), and any controls she places on herself is helpful....... but also like throwing a glass of water on the raging fire of her talent. Later in her career she really shocked people - me at least - she completely reinvented herself, gave a "where did THAT come from?" technical performance and won a Tony for a very hard (and long) part she was completely wrong for on paper (I saw it, she was aces). She won a bunch of Emmy's on TV and acted like she was the Queen of Acting as her movie roles evaporated - that takes a lot of balls to keep doing over and over. .........here's something people might argue with me on but I would say her performance in Frances is literally the best film performance within the worst movie I've ever seen. I recently re-watched it - she's flat out amazing and the film works but without her would be shaky at best - worse than shaky. She also has great friends irl - she's the sexy af woman in the picture below with another Triple Crown winner - I do not know who the other woman is that they let crash the photo but she clearly is not a Triple Crown winner Happy Birthday Jessica

Huge fan! Greatly prefer her to Streep. I think she's utterly excellent and bordering on all-time great in "Murder House" and "Asylum" seasons of "American Horror Story".
BEST PERFORMANCES American Horror Story: Murder House (TV) American Horror Story: Asylum (TV) Frances Music Box Feud (TV) Tootsie

Oh honey, she's inspirational: I read she had some wild times in Paris in the early 70s... Nightclubs, cocaine, BJs in the toilets, disco, quaaludes, modelling and sharing an apartment with Jerry Hall & Grace Jones and being a bad girl, falling in love with a drug dealer and travelling around Mexico in a minivan... Oh the 70s must have been so much fun!
She was discovered by Dino De Laurentiis... who was married to Silvana Mangano... who I love in Le Streghe... so you see, we are practically related!

Oh honeys, what a shame Grey Gardens wasn't a theatrical release instead of a TV movie because her performance as Big Edie would have easily won her an Oscar (she did pick up an Emmy). I also love the work she did in Ryan Murphy's American Horror Story. Her Marlene Dietrich wannabe in Freaks was bizarre and brilliant.

I find her to be a totally hypnotic screen presence - pacinoyes already mentioned her loss of control - I think she gives herself completely over to the character, physically and mentally. She has talked candidly about her personal battles with depression, and that she sometimes will tap into that reservoir of sorrow in her acting - it's really quite dangerous, and I think you absolutely see that in her work. MsMovieStar - I love this Helmut Newton portrait of her - she's holding her daughter by Baryshnikov here.

Oh honey, did you see that there is a Ryan Murphy project in the works where Lange will actually play Dietrich? It has been in pre-production since 2019… Hopefully filming can begin soon!

pacinoyes For somebody who champions for filmography so much, how do you stan her this hard? Especially when her very best films ( All That Jazz, Tootsie, Big Fish) aren't good because of her...

pacinoyes For somebody who champions for filmography so much, how do you stan her this hard? Especially when her very best films ( All That Jazz, Tootsie, Big Fish) aren't good because of her... Well t's like I tell those 2 Zelstans - it's the same argument for Jessica Lange that it is for anybody else: * First btw - to THAT dickhead don't tell ME to fnck off and call me - or anybody a "loser" - in a thread about you defending Jonathan Majors - you're the one whose favorite actor has 2 fewer Triple Crown wins than mine, your favorite current English language actress is less acclaimed than mine, your favorite tennnis player will never be the GOAT : 24 and counting > 22 dumbass.....
I mean you have made being a fan of losers an Art form - You're King of the Losers .........get out of here before I give you a slap you half a sissy ..........oh...........Merry Christmas!
* Now: I think filmography does matter - and hers, like Glenn Closes's and Gerladine Page's matters and hurts them too like it hurts the men - Washington, O'Toole after the 60s, Cage, Penn etc. I covered this in the link below - Jessica Lange with a better filmography would be higher rated ......so would those men ....... This is a fact - it's not my opinion............it is obvious.........pffffft:

I think the main reason is because..... Jessica Lange is tied 2nd for most Triple Crown wins in history. Has a very good chance to be tied #1 in the next 3 years. Denzel Washington is behind guys like Jason Robards, Melvyn Douglas, and Jack Albertson in Triple Crown wins...... people nobody here talks about. I appreciate Denzel a lot. He's a lot better than guys or gals that takes up the majority of MAR threads. But I just think 3 for Denzel compared to 6 for Jessica is mostly why.

Lange gets more of a pass for me among her female counterparts - because filmography matters far less for females and the success of a movie less often depends on an actress........or did for a long time anyway now I do rank her a little lower on the all time female list because of her filmography - like I do him for the males - that still applies imo - and I said that in response to Nikon's post ^ ............but it's not exactly an apples to apples comparison ........thee's not A LOT of females with filmographies that stand with males anyway - it applies to Close / Page ..........Burstyn somewhat also ..........and doesn't have anything to do with the dudes anyway ......... Lange's award haul is mindboggling - particularly in that several of those Emmy and the Tony win were specifically outside what she had done earlier......things that could only be done by "the older Jessica Lange" which is amazing ...........because she was pretty good before ........

I think that's a good point. There are lots of actresses with unexcitable filmographies. I don't think Kidman, Streep, Huppert's, and Blanchett's filmographies will hold in the long run for their filmic values.... for example, but they'll still be considered GOATs. I don't think Tar is gonna be remembered in 10 years for much except Blanchett, for instance. Streep's best movie where she played a pivotal role is Bridges of Madison County. Nicole Kidman I said before is known on a name basis, but she lags Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock, and Angelina Jolie starting from the 2000s based on general audiences preferences because her movies are not liked enough. Dogville has some cred among snobs, and Eyes Wide Shut if you choose to take it seriously..... but some people in the late 90s just saw it as good porn. The only ones with great filmographies are Bergman, Ullmann, and Rowlands. So it's not uncommon for actresses to have mild or weak filmographies. I totally see your point. Lange should not be singled out for having a weak filmography. And damn for ranking Lange lower for filmography. Jessica Lange should be Top 10. Bergman, Mirren, Smith, Huppert, Swinton. Really I struggle beyond that to find many people with as many great performances across all mediums as Lange.
