So yesterday I watched "The King Of Comedy", which is sadly probably the most underrated and unknown Scorsese movie. Sometimes I am taken by surprise how much I like a movie, when I didn't expect to like it or started to watch it without any high expectations as was the case with this one. For me it's definitely one of the best Scorsese movies and De Niro gives one of the best performances of his career. It did get a lot of love from the BAFTAS, but I am baffled why it didn't get any nominations at the Musical/Comedy Golden Globes. It is a great satire and still holds true. I laughed out loud several times while watching it, which is pretty rare for me, and was completely immersed in it. So, does anyone else like it as much as me?
Here is one of the funniest scenes:

It's easily better than Taxi Driver and Raging Bull and even Goodfellas. Best De Niro performance as well.

Indeed one of Scorseses most underrated. Well written, witty, funny and DeNiro is great as usual.

Is it really underrated? I think amongst cinephiles it's his most discussed and lauded after 'Taxi Driver' and 'Raging Bull'. For me it's his 2nd best film after 'After Hours', amazing script and the tone is just brilliant. Disgusted at Hollywood's lack of roles for Sandra Bernhard, who is brilliant here.

I would guess that Hollywood had a hard time embracing it because it's a satire of them. That said, Wendy is right-it is now very much appreciated.
I think this movie might have De Niro at his most De Niro.

Yeah, I'm not really big on it. I don't think it's as overrated as Taxi Driver (which I consider one of the most overrated films and certainly the most overrated male performance of all time), but when the most tolerable thing about your film is Jerry freaking Lewis, yeah, you didn't do something right. I know what it was going for and it certainly was an influential film, but I take a hard pass on it.

Still need to see it but I don't see it topping After Hours.

Adore it, and it is definitely one of my Top 5 from Marty. It has the best De Niro performance in a Scorsese and is probably the funniest 'awkward' comedy ever.

I thought that it really got better as it went along, and it ended up being quite a good film ahead of its time. The performances were fine across the board.

De Niro gives one of the greatest performances of his career, while Lewis and Bernhard have almost never been better. This is a near masterpiece.

Never get the fuss around it, while entertaining, I thought it was too obvious and knew where it was going and barely anything in the execution was interesting, for me it's in that group of movies who think are very clever but really aren't. The weirdest thing is that Jerry Lewis is quite great in it.

One of Scorse's best.
I would say After Hours is probably his most underrated movie though.

It's one of Scorsese's best. A great satire on 80's television and fame, and along with After Hours proves that Scorsese could do black comedies quite well.

I think that it was very much ahead of its time. it might be the 80s in the film, but it might as well be today. It has a real timeless quality about it.

Its themes are very relevant especially with the internet age, and people wanting to be famous more than ever. It's a timeless in a lot of ways, because of that.
