Since their next masterpiece is dropping next week... Is This It and Room on Fire are pretty much tied at #1 for me depending on the day... and the other three are all pretty much tied for second place. This could also be turned into the general Strokes discussion thread.

Don't mean to be basic or anything, but, like, it's Is This It, no question. Easily one of the best albums I've ever heard, especially in terms of front-to-back perfection. It's one of my go-to's for anytime when I have no idea what to listen to, I'll just put that album on. There's no mood it doesn't suit, it never gets old or boring, it has this lightning-in-a-bottle magic to it that makes it something really special that I don't think they were ever gonna top.
Room on Fire isn't quite on that same level to me, but I get why some people prefer it ... it's nearly just as listenable, but I've never obsessed over it. There's a lot of days when I think Comedown Machine might actually be my #2 ... I've spoken of my love for that album before. It's sort of a totally different vibe for them, and it's a vibe that appeals to me very, very much. Has this lovely dreamy quality to it that's sort of a total 180 from what I love about Is This It, but a quality that I love just as much as the pure energy and "I don't give a fuck" punkness of Is This It.

Is This It and a notch below is Room On Fire...... Like the 3 great early 2000s bands along with The Libertines and White Stripes (there were more but those 3 are historically crucial bands) they paid off less as they went on: imo the earlier album is better to me than the "2nd" in each case - but hey each of those 3 bands have 2 albums that flirt with top 10 of the decade. That's quite a feat..... I will say that Is This It exists for me only in the UK version with NYC Cops - the US version that removed it is lesser and RoF is a lot closer to matching that US album than it is the original record - I mean that original album not only has that greeeeeeeat song on it, it has the better album cover too.

^ I'll agree that "Cops" is a better song than "When It Started" and brings the album up a notch even further, but I still maintain that the American cover is the superior one and I'll die on that hill ... there's something about the design, the simplicity of the color contrast, I don't know, it's just beautiful for me and is one of my favorite album covers ...

Is This It by a huge margin, it's a classic. Second and third have a few good songs, not so much on the other two. I am hopeful for the new one based on the quality of the singles.

Nah, that cover is fine but the original cover is a classic and goes perfectly with the album. It just sounds like black and white to me. It was only changed because Americans are prudes and it would not have been able to get into record stores, which still mattered at the time.

Prettyyy much my favorite band
1. Room on Fire - perfect record front to back, captured my teenage angst in a way little else did, JC's vocals are at their best pre-Tyranny, and has probably the most brilliant opener/closer dynamic I've ever heard with Whatever Happened? and I Can't Win. Always felt the gang was underrated as lyricists and not enough is made of them opening this thing with the line, "I want to be forgotten, and I don't want to be reminded..." and ending with "...hold on, yes, I'll be right back."
2. Is This It - yeah I mean it's awesome.
3. Comedown Machine - in some ways this is their most mature album, a song like Slow Animals is just stupidly brilliant and I've flat out never heard music that gives off the same vibe stuff like Tap Out or Partners in Crime does. Unfortunately, it also has the only genuinely bad Strokes song (All the Time - talk about phoning it in), and there're a few poorly executed moments (One Way Trigger...tried?). Still, glad this is getting a bit of a reappraisal these days.
4. Angles - their most inconsistent (how could it not be given the circumstances surrounding it), but the highs here are ridiculous (UCOD, Gratisfaction), and it's where they first really started experimenting with their sound in a way I found really interesting.
5. First Impressions of Earth - easily their weakest for me...a bit droning for my taste at times...but still pretty great.
Future Present Past was an incredible EP, all three of the songs on there were masterworks and all in totally different ways, with Drag Queen their greatest, most incisive political song. Would rank it right up there with Room on Fire.
Super excited for The New Abnormal. Loved At the Door and Bad Decisions is a lot of fun.

Never liked them much. Is This It is pretty good for an indie/alternative rock album but everything else they've done is quite dull and uninteresting for me. I'm generally not a fan of the type of music they're making.
