I'd love to hear everyone's argument for why Labeouf is supporting in Honey Boy. He's the only actor to appear in both past and present storylines, and is just as important as Jupe in the past scenes. This as the film consistently jumps between their perspectives and doesn't favor one over the other. The film is about the father and son, not just the son. For me, at least, it feels like LaBeouf's character only really exists to inform Jupe's character growth and development, and that while he is obviously a critically important character in the story (which alone would be enough of an argument to have him as a co-lead), I look at Jupe/Hedges as sharing the co-lead role. This can be contrasted with My Left Foot, where I feel Hugh O'Conor is a supporting character in his scenes because those moments when he's on-screen are more about Fricker and McAnally. I don't feel the same with LaBeouf. If I rewatch it, I might come around to it (and as I said, he's borderline), but after seeing it he felt more of a supporting presence. But then, I'm the guy who has Affleck in supporting for Jesse James because I think it ties into the themes that Robert Ford can't even be the lead in his own biopic. Well my rebuttal would be the scenes where we have LaBeouf not only not interacting with his son, he's also not even existing in relation to him. For example the AA, scenes, particularly the extended one where he talks about his own past, firmly to relate to his own story, and he doesn't once mention in his son.
