I don't really get how they nominated three Godfather boys (all admittedly great) but didn't nominate the best of them all (Cazale).

Voted for Gazzo. His speech with Duvall at the end is one of the best acted scenes of the year and in any of the Godfather movies.

Don't understand the hype for De Niro's performance at all. It's pretty low energy.
Gazzo all the way.

1 De Niro (but Cazale should have been nominated and won!) 2 Strasberg 3 Gazzo 4 Bridges (who was lead) 5 Astaire

That year was so great for that category (and not only that one). I mean you could basically fill a line-up alone with the guys from Godfather II. And I echoe the sentiments that Cazale should have been nominated - though not won. The right man won that year.
Would have loved to see Sean Connery for Murder on the Orientexpress in the line-up as well or John Huston for Chinatown - instead of Fred Astaire, who was alright, but not strong enough to get a nod that year from me.

I could argue about Connery, Duvall and Cazale for both GF II and the Conversation...

And how about Robert Shaw for The Taking of Pelham One Two Three!
