Uncle Boonmee is super cool.
Haven't seen that Hamlet but I agree with the consensus of it being the GOAT Shakespeare and will likely check out a few of the adaptations someday

Uncle Boonmee is super cool. Haven't seen that Hamlet but I agree with the consensus of it being the GOAT Shakespeare and will likely check out a few of the adaptations someday Some people like to crap on Olivier's Hamlet but it's great. It condenses the play to 2 1/2 hours and takes out the political stuff to just focus on Hamlet's psychology. It's got a noir/German Expressionist visual style with deep shadows on huge sets like you're inside Hamlet's mind. The best approach to the play I've ever seen plus Olivier and his actors do Shakespeare better than anybody.

This is pretty solid. Lots of stuff on here that may not make my list but are great anyway.

I think you were the reason that I saw Tea and Sympathy last summer, which was a great film & a marvelous performance by Deborah Kerr. All in all, great list.

I think you were the reason that I saw Tea and Sympathy last summer, which was a great film & a marvelous performance by Deborah Kerr. All in all, great list. I feel a little awkward about how often I hype it on here so good to know someone actually watched it. I do feel a little odd about recommending it out of the blue since it's very much an old Hollywood melodrama so you sort of have to like that milieu to like it I think. But if you do it's a perfect movie. Kerr gives a top ten of all time tier performance. Simultaneously tightly wound and close to the chest and expressive.

Really solid list. I especially love the inclusion of the Monkees movie Head at 41. Such a crazy, psychedelic, and fun encapsulation of its time period.

Really solid list. I especially love the inclusion of the Monkees movie Head at 41. Such a crazy, psychedelic, and fun encapsulation of its time period. A couple of these are a little obscure so I was wondering if people would know what that and The Missing Picture even are. Head is the best analysis of being trapped by fame I've ever seen. It has the reputation of being "that crazy drug movie the Monkees did to destroy their corny family friendly image on purpose" which is part of the appeal but it's more than that. I think if The Beatles or another more respected band had made it it would get more serious critical attention.
