But the main takeaway of course is that these animals should not be caged and bred period... and especially not by people that are batshit insane. I just made it through one episode so far because I had to take a breather because I just felt bad for those poor animals. I mean I know from social media and what not that there's the whole question about what happened to Carole Baskin's first husband , but I guess for now she's slightly better than Joe and Bhagavan because it doesn't seem like she's breeding the tigers just to get the cubs. She's definitely crazy though, and I'm not sure how much better her facility really is besides not breeding the animals she does have. I hate PETA though, so there's no winners and unfortunately the animals are the losers of the story. Yeah, it was impossible for me to watch it... no matter how much I was enjoying the batshit people... and not feel bad for the countless animals. But I think the filmmakers made it pretty clear how they felt about the animals being locked up and bred... and every sane person watching it should feel the same. Hopefully the popularity of the series will lead to something actually being done about it. Carole Baskin is definitely better than Joe and Doc... but she's still a massive hypocrite and her place is only slightly less fucked up.

People ranked in order of detestable:
Carole: (Transparently an enormous hypocrite, as well as literal murderer, forged her husband's will and left his children with next to nothing - her hideously phoney attempts at being nice only somehow make her appear more unlikeable than all the outwardly vulgar people in the show)
Doc Antle: (If the allegations of cub euthanasia are accurate, he's clearly the worst abuser of animals on the show, not to mention that he's already a groomer of young women and a cult leader)
Joe (Honestly his biggest problem is sheer narcissism - the scene at Travis' funeral, where he has to make it all about him, is cringe-inducing. I'm surprised there's not a bigger discussion about how Joe essentially manipulated two straight men into thinking they were gay, which resulted in Travis' reckless behaviour that lead to his accidental suicide)
Jeff: (Abuser and womaniser - even when his wife is pregnant....and next to him while being interviewed he's still making slimy comments)
Joe's Campaign Manager: (Most normal guy by far, but when he started vaping I feared for the worst. I feel so sorry that he had to be the one to witness Travis' death, considering he was only associated with Joe by knowing him at fucking Walmart and got dragged into the whole mess.)

Carole is the worst of the bunch, mainly due to how she portrays herself to be a better person than the others when she’s pretty much doing the same and likely murdered her husband and fucked over her step kids. I hope she gets what’s coming to her because it just made me mad seeing her pretty much unscathed with all of the shit she did. Also, Harold is such a bitch. You can tell he tells Carole what she wants to hear and it’s either her way or no way.
Doc is creepy as hell and portrays himself as someone that he isn’t. I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t see any jail time.
Jeff Lowe and Allen Glover set Joe up I think. I hope the hammer comes down on both of them. Lowe is such a shady fuck.
Joe started off with good intentions and then just let money and fame get to his head. He deserves to be in jail. He’s manipulative and selfish. From manipulating those two husbands who weren’t even gay (one of which killed themselves) to paying his workers 150 dollars a week to making the zoo more of a big deal about him than the animals. He lost his way, especially when you see him talking at the end of the last episode of how these animals shouldn’t be breed. There’s more redeeming qualities to him when compared to the other people, but that doesn’t override all of the bad stuff he’s done.
Animals shouldn’t be locked in cages, plain and simple. They’re the ones that lost the most throughout this whole situation.

Gonna be hard to prove if there is no forensic evidence. At this point, somebody's gonna have to rat on Carol and have proof in order to file charges against her.

As an animal lover and someone who struggles with material where literally every character is unlikeable, I'm struggling to get into this. Understand why it's become popular, but this is just in the "not for me" pile. Same. I just finished it and i wish i spent my time watching other things.

That's because most people didn't know this sort of thing was happening in the U.S. Ha ha. I'm telling you NY, LA and other metro areas do not represent what the rest of the U.S. looks like.

wow this was really horribly made and super carried by the material
and by the material that's really just joe's charisma/drip/persona. like yeah it's pretty insane but it's also pretty icky as far as exploitation goes. you can just as easily watch an interview or two of joe exotic and read some wiki articles and get basically the same thing

I wasn't even able to finish the first episode, it felt soooo uncomfortable and not in the way its intended to be. None of them seem like real humans, they don't behave like so and honestly their skin quality is like so bad, and there were tats and tiger underwears like everywhere in half the show that I watched. Also, I just didn't want to see those tigers harmed, and these a-holes saying throughout not that they're doing bad things, but that other is doing it worse. It's not fair to the animals, I just can't watch it further sorry.

All the comments made me people see this and was worth it. One of the wildest (pun intended) documentaries ever made.
And yes, Carole is the worst person there, because she's almost certainly a murderer, and even taking that away, she's just as bad as the others; Doc Antle is really up there, though.
That said, Joe deserved what he got, he really got corrupted and lost his way entirely.

There was a follow up special with Joel McHale that went into more of Joe being a shite person.

I know the documentary had Joe as a springboard and then all the chaos exploded from there, but the animals were really left behind. Much like Don't Fuck with Cats, this left a really bad taste in my mouth by the end.

Ambrose Bierce, in his Devil's Dictionary, defined an allegory as "A metaphor in three volumes and a tiger." The concluding metaphor here is right out of fiction, that such a peppy, flamboyant zookeeper would end up stripped of his much jewelry and confined to a cage like one of his animals. Fascinating that the big three heads of tiger keeping are all such driven, loony hypocrites. Also fascinating is the layered-on performance(s) of Joe Exotic - his self taping and careening reputation, the reality show that invites melodrama and chaos, and most of all the doc filmmakers themselves capturing and compiling this wildly hysteric, moronic, riddled ride. Very entertaining stuff. 8/10
Early 2010s I would've said Alex Gibney was the "it" doc filmmaker (just btwn Armstrong Lie and Going Clear) but now I think it's Chris Smith who's only an exec producer here but his stamp is all over this - funny, raffish ambition, unique performative figures, logistic nightmares, and stardom seeking - American Movie, Jim & Andy, Fyre - and the Madeline McCann doc with the disappearance element. Smith's editing team worked on this too...

Did anyone else pick up that there was a total void in Carole Baskin's eyes? Every time they showed her, I got sociopathic vibes from her. Also, notice she said if someone wanted to have the tigers kill you, they'd put sardine oil on you. Is that a clue to her method, that murdering bitch?

She scared me way more than anyone else in the show, even more than Mario Tabraue, the drug lord the Scarface character was based on.As much as Joe deserves to be in prison, she deserves to be there even more.
