This decade was an incredibly trying one for me. I was diagnosed with depression, I’ve been suffering from terrible social anxiety, I’ve had family issues and bereavements, I’ve had to put a stop to some toxic relationships, it’s been hard for me to open up to anyone because of fear of getting hurt, and I’ve just been hit with some really bad luck. Needless to say, I have not had it easy. I’ve dealt with feelings and situations I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemies, and sometimes, I wondered why I even get out of bed in the morning.
It’s for those reasons that I always feel desperate for some escapism, and I mean it when I say movies, at times, were the only thing keeping me alive. This decade marked the point where I got more serious in my film watching habits, branching out with new genres and more out of left field filmmaking, sometimes stepping way out of my comfort zone to do so. As a result, I’ve amassed almost 1,000 films watched in the last decade alone. And through both the good and the bad, it all at least gave me something to focus on, to distract myself from the pain of the real world, and let me pretend that none of them mattered for a couple of hours.
Going into the 2020’s (once this Covid-19 pandemic dies down), I want this to be the decade I go from hating myself, to finally showing myself some love, which I’m already taking steps to do. But even so, I have no plans to slow down how many movies I take in. Without them, I doubt I’d have retained my sanity. They’re my favorite means of escape, a much needed breather in trying times, and within the space of the theater, a glorious shared experience I hope never goes away. Here’s to another ten years.
And to commemorate these achievements, the nominations for the first Decennial MYeah Awards are...
